Barpeta, Assam | August 25, 2025, In a historic cultural gathering, nearly 7,000 women in Barpeta district performed ‘Thiyanam’ on Sunday, aiming to secure a place in the record books. The event was dedicated to the revered Vaishnavite saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva, whose legacy continues to inspire Assam’s spiritual and cultural life.
Aiming for the Record Books
The large-scale recital of ‘Thiyanam’ was organised at Barpeta Sattra, one of the most prominent Vaishnavite monasteries in Assam. Women participants from across the district came together to chant devotional verses, seeking recognition for the largest collective performance of its kind.
Officials from record-certifying bodies were present to document the event. Organisers expressed confidence that the gathering would be acknowledged nationally and possibly internationally.
Honouring Srimanta Sankardeva’s Legacy
The event was not just about setting records but also about celebrating Assam’s cultural identity. Srimanta Sankardeva, the 15th-century saint, reformer, and poet, introduced neo-Vaishnavism in Assam and laid the foundation for the sattra tradition.
Barpeta, known as the “Land of Sattra Culture,” has long been a hub for spiritual and artistic practices linked to Sankardeva’s teachings. Moreover, the performance of ‘Thiyanam’ was described by community leaders as a tribute to the saint’s vision of devotion, unity, and collective worship.
Voices from the Event
Many participants expressed their pride in being part of the recital. “Performing ‘Thiyanam’ with thousands of women gave me an overwhelming sense of unity and devotion,” said a local participant.
Organisers highlighted the importance of women’s role in preserving traditions. “This performance shows how cultural heritage is alive in Assam. It is also an opportunity to place Barpeta on the global map,” said one of the event coordinators.
Cultural Significance of Thiyanam
‘Thiyanam’ is a devotional performance associated with Sattriya traditions, combining rhythmic chanting and meditative postures. Moreover, it is regarded as a spiritual practice that deepens devotion while also serving as a collective form of cultural expression.
By involving such a large number of participants, the Barpeta event reinforced the intergenerational continuity of these traditions. Elders, middle-aged women, and young participants all took part, making it a unique cultural moment.
Assam’s Growing Cultural Presence
This performance comes at a time when Assam is witnessing renewed global attention to its heritage. Also, from Bihu’s recognition by Guinness World Records for the largest dance performance to events like this one, the state is showcasing its traditions on international platforms.
Observers believe that such cultural events not only promote heritage but also boost tourism and community pride. Nevertheless, local authorities indicated that more such initiatives could be supported in the coming years.
Looking Ahead
While the official confirmation of the record is still awaited, organisers remain hopeful. Although, even beyond the recognition. However, the event has already achieved its goal of bringing thousands together to celebrate faith and culture.
For Assam, the recital serves as a reminder of the state’s deep-rooted traditions and its ability to inspire collective participation. For the women of Barpeta, it was a moment of devotion, unity, and pride.
