Tragedy Strikes: Underage Couple Attempts Suicide in Dikrong River

Chhath Puja celebrations in Lakhimpur, Assam, turned tragic as an underage couple attempted to end their lives by jumping into the Dikrong river. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon around 3 pm, during the festivities.

The incident unfolded in Harmutty, Lakhimpur, where a young couple from No 2 Parbatipur decided to take a drastic step amid the Chhath Puja celebrations. The couple jumped from the Dikrong bridge on NH-15 around 3 pm on Sunday.

The young lovers, residents of No 2 Parbatipur in Harmutty, chose the Dikrong bridge on NH-15 as the site for their drastic step. They leaped into the river, and while an elderly man was able to rescue the girl from the strong currents, the boy was swept away.

Tragedy Strikes : Search and Rescue Operation

Immediate search and rescue operations were initiated to locate the missing boy. Despite efforts, his body remained untraceable on the day of the incident.

On Monday, approximately 4 kilometers downstream from the bridge, near No 1 Parbatipur, the boy’s lifeless body was found stuck on the riverbed in shallow waters. He was identified as Dibya Borah.

While the tragic incident cast a shadow over the festivities, Chhath Puja celebrations concluded with sunrise prayers. The community, especially in the Khelmati area of North Lakhimpur, participated in overnight celebrations, including the traditional river Arati on Sunday night.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the complexities of life, even during festive moments, and the need for vigilance and support, especially for vulnerable individuals.
