Agartala Hosts LiverCon 2026 as Experts Warn India Could Become ‘Liver Disease Capital’ of the World

Leading liver disease specialists from across India have warned that the country could become the “liver disease capital” of the world if urgent preventive measures are not implemented. The warning was issued during the 9th LiverCon, organised by the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura (HFT) at Agartala Government Medical College on June 27 and 28.

Experts highlighted a sharp rise in liver disease cases driven by unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, diabetes, alcohol abuse, and Hepatitis B and C infections. They also stressed that advances in treatment now allow many patients with serious liver diseases to receive effective medical care and liver transplantation.

Key Facts

Experts Raise Alarm Over Rising Liver Disease

During the two-day conference, liver disease specialists expressed concern over the rapid increase in liver-related illnesses across India. According to experts, liver disease cases have risen by more than 141 percent in recent years, making the condition a growing public health challenge.

They said unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, diabetes, excessive consumption of junk food, alcohol abuse, intravenous drug use, and infections caused by Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses are among the major factors contributing to the increase.

Early Prevention Is Critical

Experts stressed that liver diseases often develop silently, with many patients showing symptoms only after the condition has progressed.

Therefore, they urged governments, healthcare institutions, and the public to prioritise preventive healthcare, early diagnosis, regular screening, vaccination against Hepatitis B, and lifestyle modifications to reduce the burden of liver disease.

They also called for stronger public awareness campaigns to educate people about liver health and disease prevention.

Treatment Options Continue to Improve

Despite the growing number of cases, specialists reassured patients that modern medical advances have significantly improved treatment outcomes.

According to the experts, liver cirrhosis can now be managed effectively in many cases, while liver transplantation has become increasingly accessible and successful. As a result, patients diagnosed with complex liver diseases have better treatment prospects than in the past.

Community Hepatology Takes Centre Stage

One of the major themes of LiverCon 2026 was community hepatology, which focuses on preventing liver diseases through community-based healthcare initiatives.

Experts praised the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura’s model for raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, and preventing liver diseases at the community level. Moreover, they suggested that similar programmes could be replicated in other parts of the country.

The conference also explored the future use of artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen community screening, improve early detection, and support preventive healthcare.

Doctors and Students Benefit from Scientific Sessions

The conference brought together leading hepatologists, gastroenterologists, researchers, and super-specialists from premier medical institutions across India.

Around 250 doctors from Tripura attended the event. In addition, postgraduate medical students participated in academic sessions, scientific discussions, and case presentations conducted by senior faculty members.

The programme provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to exchange clinical experiences and discuss the latest treatment protocols for complex liver disorders.

HFT Oration Award Presented

During the conference, organisers presented the prestigious HFT Oration Award to Dr. S.P. Mishra of Motilal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to hepatology.

The organisers also announced that the 10th edition of LiverCon will be held on June 13 and 14, 2027.
