Agartala–Kolkata Bus Service via Dhaka Restarts After 18-Month Suspension

Passenger bus services between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka resumed today after remaining suspended for 18 months due to instability in Bangladesh. The restoration marks a significant step in reviving cross-border connectivity between India and Bangladesh.

Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury welcomed passengers at the Akhaura Integrated Check Post. He was joined by officials from the Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC), including Acting Chairman Samar Roy and Managing Director Hemanta Debbarma.

Services Suspended Amid Unrest

The Agartala–Kolkata Maitree and Shyamoli bus services were launched in 2001 to strengthen transport links and people-to-people contact between the two countries. Over the years, the service became a vital route for travellers, traders, and tourists.

However, authorities suspended operations in September 2024 due to political unrest in Bangladesh. Officials cited passenger safety and security concerns as the primary reason for halting the cross-border movement of buses.

With the formation of a stable government under Tarique Rahman and the easing of visa procedures, both sides have now agreed to restore the service.

Minister Highlights Cultural and Economic Significance

Speaking to reporters, Chowdhury described the bus route as more than just a transport facility. He said it acts as a bridge of communication, culture, and commerce between India and Bangladesh.

According to the minister, initiatives like these deepen bilateral friendship and open new avenues for economic growth. He added that the resumed service would give a boost to tourism, cross-border trade, and people-to-people exchanges.

“India has always considered Bangladesh a close neighbour and relative. Any unrest there affects us as well. With stability returning, relations are moving in a positive direction,” he said.

Boost to Tourism and Trade

Officials believe the restored service will benefit travellers who prefer a direct and cost-effective road route between Tripura and West Bengal through Bangladesh. The bus journey significantly reduces travel time compared to longer domestic routes within India.

Tourism stakeholders in Tripura expect increased footfall from both Indian and Bangladeshi visitors. Business communities also anticipate smoother trade interactions and stronger commercial ties.

The Akhaura border check post, which serves as a key transit point, witnessed renewed activity as passengers crossed into Bangladesh to continue their journey to Kolkata.

Strengthening India–Bangladesh Ties

The Agartala–Kolkata bus service has long symbolised friendly ties between the two nations. Its revival signals improved diplomatic and economic relations after months of uncertainty.

Transport department officials expressed optimism that the resumed operations will reinforce historical and cultural bonds shared by the people of the region. They also highlighted the importance of sustained peace and cooperation for regional development.

Chowdhury concluded by stating that just as the bus reaches its destination, India and Bangladesh will continue progressing together on the path of trust, partnership, and shared prosperity.

The resumption of services is expected to encourage further cross-border initiatives and strengthen connectivity in the Northeast region.
