Arunachal Pradesh has launched the Arunachal Handloom & Handicrafts Policy 2025, marking a bold step toward cultural preservation and rural development. This policy aims to strengthen the livelihoods of weavers and artisans while protecting the state’s diverse tribal heritage.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the policy at a cultural event in Itanagar. The gathering included artisans from across the state, many of whom saw the policy as a long-awaited opportunity for change.

Boosting Weaver Livelihoods

The Arunachal Handloom & Handicrafts Policy 2025 focuses on improving income for weavers through financial aid, training, and better market connections. The government will provide modern tools to make weaving easier and faster.

Women, who form the majority of weavers, will receive special attention. Many of them run small home-based units. Now, they will join cooperative networks to sell products at fair prices without relying on middlemen.

Safeguarding Tribal Heritage

Every tribe in Arunachal has unique weaving patterns, colours, and motifs. These designs are more than fabric—they carry history and identity. The new policy ensures this heritage stays alive.

Officials will document traditional designs and seek Geographical Indication (GI) tags for them. This move prevents imitation by outsiders and ensures that authentic tribal products get global recognition.

Expanding Market Reach

Artisans in Arunachal often face limited access to buyers outside their districts. To change this, the policy includes strong marketing plans.

The state will host handloom expos, encourage participation in national and international fairs, and build an exclusive e-commerce platform for local products. This online space will connect weavers directly with global customers, ensuring better earnings.

Training and Skill Development

The government will open Handloom Training Centres in every district. These centres will teach both traditional and modern techniques. Young designers from fashion institutes will collaborate with weavers to create innovative designs while keeping cultural authenticity.

This blend of old and new is expected to make Arunachal’s handloom products more appealing to modern markets without losing their roots.

Financial Support and Security

Raw materials such as cotton, silk, and natural dyes will be available at subsidised rates. The state will also provide low-interest loans so that artisans can expand their businesses.

In addition, weavers will get insurance coverage. This support will protect them against income loss due to accidents, illness, or natural disasters, allowing them to work with greater peace of mind.

Promoting Sustainability

The policy encourages eco-friendly practices in production. Artisans will use natural fibres, plant-based dyes, and sustainable harvesting methods.

This approach protects the environment while attracting environmentally conscious buyers. It also strengthens Arunachal’s position as a leader in ethical and sustainable craftsmanship.

Community Reactions

Weavers welcomed the new initiative with optimism. “This policy gives us tools to grow and share our culture with the world,” said a senior artisan from Ziro Valley.

A Monpa tribe weaver added, “Our patterns tell our stories. Now, they will be protected and respected.”

Vision for 2030

By 2030, the state aims to double artisan incomes and make Arunachal a global name in handloom. The government also plans to link handloom clusters with tourism. Visitors will watch live weaving demonstrations and buy authentic products directly from the makers.

The Arunachal Handloom & Handicrafts Policy 2025 is both an economic and cultural milestone. It empowers weavers, protects heritage, and promotes sustainability. By merging tradition with modern opportunity, the policy ensures that the artistry of Arunachal’s tribes will thrive for generations.
