Key Facts

Teen Swept Away During Picnic Near River

According to police officials, Prateshmesh Baswakar had gone for a picnic with a group of 10 minors near the Yomgo river in West Siang district earlier this month. During the outing, five boys reportedly moved close to the riverbank to record a video while holding each other’s hands.

Police said one of the boys suddenly jumped into the river and was immediately swept away by the powerful current. The strong water flow made rescue efforts difficult, and the teenager went missing in the river.

Body Found After Days of Search Operation

After the incident, a large-scale search operation was launched by local residents, ITBP personnel, and security teams. However, continuous rainfall and swollen river conditions severely affected rescue efforts over several days.

On May 11, local villagers spotted a decomposed body on the banks of the Yomgo river near Dama village in neighbouring Siang district. They quickly informed the authorities.

Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Lakhi Mena later confirmed that the recovered body was that of the missing teenager, Prateshmesh Baswakar.

The body was retrieved with the help of Army personnel and jawans from the 20th Battalion of the ITBP.

Police Register Unnatural Death Case

Police officials stated that an unnatural death case has been registered at Aalo Police Station. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Authorities are also examining the circumstances that led to the teenager entering the river during the picnic outing.
