Arunachal Pradesh’s Airgun Surrender Abhiyan achieves global recognition at UNESCO’s International Conference on Biosphere Reserves in Sabah, Malaysia, marking a significant milestone for the state’s wildlife conservation.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Environmental Success

Dr. Damodhar A.T., IFS, Director of Dehang-Debang Biosphere Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, received the prestigious honor on November 13, presented by Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmed, the Malaysian Federal Government Minister for Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change.

Voluntary Conservation Drive

Launched on March 17, 2021, in Lumdung, East Kameng District, the Airgun Surrender Abhiyan encourages voluntary surrender of airguns and licensed firearms. Lumdung, surrendering 46 airguns, became the first airgun-free village in Arunachal Pradesh.

Momentum under Mama Natung’s Leadership

Under Mama Natung’s dynamic leadership, the initiative gained momentum, with active efforts in wildlife conservation awareness. Since its inception, over 2,400 airguns and nine licensed firearms have been voluntarily surrendered.

Testament to Environmental Conservation

Expressing gratitude, Dr. Damodhar A.T., IFS, stated, “It was a great honor to represent India and Arunachal Pradesh on UNESCO’s global forum for Airgun Surrender Abhiyan. Thanks to MoEF&CC, GoI, and UNESCO.”

This global recognition not only elevates Arunachal Pradesh’s conservation efforts but also emphasizes the significance of community-driven initiatives in preserving biodiversity.
