Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday hailed the Solung festival celebrations in Siang district as a “model worth replicating across festivals,” lauding the community-driven effort that blended cultural revival with environmental responsibility.
This year’s Solung festivities, jointly organised by Siang District Tourism, Muhaan, the Solung Committee, and the Pangin community, stood out for their sustainable approach. From replacing single-use plastics with bamboo and toko leaves to adorning the venue with hand-painted banners, the event demonstrated that traditional celebrations can thrive without compromising ecological values.
Equally significant was the revival of age-old rituals and traditional Adi games, giving younger generations a rare opportunity to witness and participate in customs that have defined their community for centuries. “The way culture and sustainability were interwoven this year is truly commendable,” Khandu noted in his message on X on Thursday afternoon.
Beyond rituals and performances, the festival introduced several innovative features aimed at education and awareness. An “open museum” showcased the richness of Adi life, while eco-workshops for children and women promoted sustainable practices in day-to-day living. These efforts ensured that the celebration was more than entertainment , it became a living classroom on culture, environment, and community values.
Performances by local artists added vibrancy to the event, while the emphasis on eco-friendly decor and resource use struck a chord with both participants and visitors. Organisers believe this year’s Solung will be remembered as a turning point in how festivals are celebrated in the region.
The Chief Minister’s endorsement further amplifies the significance of the initiative, positioning it as a pioneering model for other districts and states to emulate. As Arunachal Pradesh looks to balance modern aspirations with cultural roots, the eco-conscious Solung celebration offers a blueprint for festivals of the future.
