The approval marks one of the most significant policy decisions taken by the government at the beginning of its new term. The state administration said the move aims to ensure equality and bring uniformity in personal laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

The decision immediately triggered political discussions across Assam and other parts of the country. Supporters described the move as a step toward equality and legal reform, while opposition parties raised concerns regarding its impact on cultural and religious diversity.

Assam Cabinet Takes Major Policy Decision

The first cabinet meeting of the BJP-led NDA government focused on several key administrative and governance matters. However, the decision regarding the Uniform Civil Code received the maximum attention.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government remains committed to implementing reforms that promote equality and simplify legal systems.

According to the Chief Minister, the Cabinet approved the policy framework for introducing a Uniform Civil Code in the state. He stated that the government would now begin consultations and legal procedures required for implementation.

Sarma also said the administration wants to ensure that the process remains constitutional and transparent. He added that legal experts and stakeholders may become part of future discussions regarding the framework.

The Chief Minister described the decision as historic and said it reflected the government’s commitment to balanced governance and social reform.

What Is a Uniform Civil Code?

A Uniform Civil Code refers to a common set of personal laws that apply equally to all citizens regardless of religion or community. These laws generally govern issues such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.

At present, different religious communities in India follow separate personal laws in many civil matters. Supporters of the UCC argue that a uniform legal framework promotes equality before the law and strengthens national integration.

The idea of a Uniform Civil Code appears in Article 44 of the Directive Principles of the Indian Constitution. The provision encourages the state to work toward securing a common civil code for citizens.

However, the issue has remained politically and socially sensitive for decades because many groups believe personal laws form an important part of religious and cultural identity.

The Assam government’s approval of the proposal has therefore generated both support and criticism from different sections of society.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Defends Cabinet Decision

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the cabinet decision and said the government believes in equal rights for all citizens.

During the press conference, Sarma stated that the proposed Uniform Civil Code would aim to ensure fairness and legal clarity in civil matters. He also claimed that the move would benefit women and vulnerable groups by providing equal legal protections.

The Chief Minister further argued that legal uniformity can reduce disputes and simplify judicial processes. According to him, many people across the country support reforms that strengthen equality and justice.

Sarma also stressed that the government would proceed carefully and follow all constitutional procedures during implementation. He assured that consultations and legal reviews would remain part of the process.

The Chief Minister added that the government would continue explaining the purpose and objectives of the policy to the public.

Opposition Parties Raise Concerns

The cabinet approval triggered immediate reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups in Assam.

Several opposition leaders questioned the timing of the announcement and accused the BJP-led government of pushing politically sensitive issues soon after the elections.

Critics argued that India’s diversity requires respect for different cultural and religious traditions. Some leaders also expressed concern that a Uniform Civil Code could create anxiety among minority communities.

At the same time, supporters of the move welcomed the decision and described it as an important step toward legal reform.

Political analysts believe the issue may become a major topic of debate in Assam and national politics over the coming months. The discussion around UCC has already remained part of political discourse in several states.

Legal experts also noted that implementing such reforms involves complex constitutional, social, and administrative considerations.

First Cabinet Meeting After Swearing-In Ceremony

The cabinet meeting took place on May 13, a day after the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP-led NDA government in Assam.

The newly elected administration held discussions on governance priorities, employment generation, and future development plans during the meeting. However, the approval of the Uniform Civil Code emerged as the most significant announcement.

Government officials said the administration wanted to begin its new term with strong policy decisions. The leadership believes such initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to reforms and governance.

Apart from the UCC proposal, the Cabinet also discussed employment, infrastructure development, and administrative reforms.

Observers noted that the government appears determined to push major policy initiatives early in its new term.

Debate Over Uniform Civil Code Likely to Continue

The Assam Cabinet’s approval of the Uniform Civil Code proposal is expected to keep political and legal debates active in the coming months.

Supporters believe the move can strengthen equality and create a simpler legal framework for citizens. Critics, however, argue that the government must carefully consider India’s cultural and religious diversity before implementing such reforms.

Legal experts believe the process may involve extensive consultations, legislative procedures, and constitutional examination before final implementation.

Political observers also expect the issue to influence future political discussions in Assam and beyond. Several states and political parties have already debated the concept of a Uniform Civil Code in recent years.

Meanwhile, the Assam government maintains that the proposal aims to strengthen equality and ensure fair legal treatment for all citizens.

As discussions continue, attention will remain focused on how the government plans to move forward with consultations and legal preparations related to the Uniform Civil Code in Assam.
