Assam CM Advocates Hosting National Games

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his eagerness to host the upcoming edition of the National Games in the state. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ‘Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi,’ Chief Minister Sarma highlighted Assam’s proud legacy in hosting major sporting events. He emphasized his government’s dedication to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision by making substantial investments in sports development.

Rich Sporting Legacy

Chief Minister Sarma reminisced about Assam’s achievements in hosting prominent sports events, including the National Games in 2007, the 12th South Asian Games in 2016, FIFA U-17 World Cup, AIBA World Women Youth Boxing Championships, Premier Badminton League, National School Games, and Khelo India Youth Games. He expressed confidence that the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2023 would add another chapter to the state’s illustrious sporting history.

While addressing the audience, Chief Minister Sarma made a formal request to the Central government, urging them to allow Assam to host the National Games in either 2025 or 2026. He underscored the great sporting legacy of Assam and envisioned more players from the state contributing significantly to the country’s sporting history in the years to come.

Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure across the state. He revealed ongoing efforts to build sports complexes in all districts and assembly constituencies, with a substantial financial allocation of Rs 800 crore to upgrade the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati to a world-class football facility. Additionally, Rs 50 crore has been allocated for sports complexes in each district and Rs 12 crore for constituencies.

The Khelo India University Games 2023 is set to witness the participation of nearly 4,000 athletes competing for a total of 262 gold medals across 20 sports disciplines. The competitions will take place in 18 venues across Guwahati and six other Northeastern towns from February 19 to 29, 2024.

The grand opening ceremony, attended by Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur, featured performances by renowned singer Papon and captivating dance displays showcasing the region’s rich tradition and the spirit of unity, diversity, and sportsmanship.
