Assam CM Welcomes Aluabari–NJP Rail Line Upgrade Approval

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomes Aluabari–NJP rail boost

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Centre’s approval for upgrading the Aluabari–New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway link. This key stretch, passing through the Siliguri corridor, plays a vital role in connecting Assam with other Northeastern states. The proposed upgrade, which includes electrification and doubling of tracks, promises faster and more reliable travel.

While thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Sarma called the Aluabari–NJP rail boost a “visionary step.” He said it aligns with the government’s long-term agenda to transform the Northeast’s connectivity.

Strategic Importance of the Route

The Aluabari–NJP line lies along the chicken’s neck corridor — a narrow stretch of land that connects the Northeast to the rest of India. Due to its geographical importance, any development along this route significantly improves movement of both people and goods. The project will not only benefit Assam but also support neighboring states such as Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.

In his statement, CM Sarma highlighted how efficient railways could reduce pressure on highways and cut down transit time. “This decision reaffirms the Centre’s commitment to empowering the Northeast,” he added.

Electrification and Modernization

The project includes electrification of the Aluabari–NJP section, a long-pending demand from local residents and traders. Electrified tracks will reduce reliance on diesel engines and promote green energy. It will also cut costs for freight and passenger trains.

Modern signaling systems and safety features are part of the upgrade. Once completed, it is expected that more express and superfast trains will operate through this line. The number of local passenger trains may also increase, easing daily travel for thousands of commuters.

Economic and Social Impact

The Aluabari–NJP rail boost carries far-reaching economic implications for Assam. Improved railway logistics will benefit the tea industry, which relies on efficient transport to reach global markets. Faster freight movement will also support coal and agriculture exports from Assam’s interior regions.

Local businesses, including MSMEs and tourism operators, are expected to gain from smoother travel. Increased connectivity to tourist destinations such as Kaziranga, Kamakhya, and Majuli may attract more visitors from North Bengal and beyond.

Additionally, job creation will result from the construction, electrification, and station upgrades. Thousands of workers, both skilled and unskilled, will find employment opportunities over the project’s timeline.

Government’s Push for Northeast Infrastructure

Over the past decade, the central government has invested heavily in the Northeast’s infrastructure. From new airports and highways to internet access and rail lines, the effort has been widespread. The Aluabari–NJP rail boost fits within this larger development framework.

CM Sarma stated that “a stronger railway backbone is essential to the Northeast’s growth story.” He believes the project will not only help Assam’s cities but also bridge gaps for remote areas in districts like Dhubri, Kokrajhar, and Goalpara.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw echoed similar views, noting that “logistics efficiency is crucial for realizing the true potential of the Northeast.”

Timeline and Funding

While the project is still in the planning phase, initial surveys and feasibility assessments have already started. Officials expect work to commence within the next fiscal year. A joint team from the Indian Railways and Northeast Frontier Railway is currently finalizing technical details.

The funding will come under the Railways’ centrally-sponsored scheme. In addition, Assam government officials have pledged local support to facilitate land acquisition and smooth implementation.

Public Response and Local Support

The local response has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents of border towns near NJP and Aluabari expressed hope that the rail boost would bring economic revival. Traders’ associations have praised the move, especially as it promises lower transport costs.

Some civic groups have raised concerns about potential displacement during land acquisition. However, the state administration has assured transparency and compensation for any affected parties.

Local panchayats and district collectors are already in talks to ensure community engagement throughout the process. Sarma’s government has instructed officials to address grievances swiftly and provide regular updates to the public.

A Step Towards Inclusive Growth

The Aluabari–NJP rail boost symbolizes a broader vision — one that includes every part of India in the growth story. For the people of Assam and the wider Northeast, better rail infrastructure means better opportunities.

Chief Minister Sarma concluded, “Connectivity is not just about rail lines; it’s about uniting communities and unlocking potential.” With the Centre’s support, Assam is on track to become a vital gateway to Southeast Asia through the Act East Policy.
