Assam Earthquake September 2025: 5.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Udalguri

Assam earthquake September 2025

The Assam earthquake September 2025 rattled the Northeast on Saturday morning when a 5.8 magnitude tremor struck Udalguri district. People across multiple states felt the tremor as buildings swayed and emergency protocols activated in hospitals and schools.

The earthquake originated at a depth of only 5 km, increasing its impact on the surface. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or structural damage occurred, but teams continue to monitor the situation.

5.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Assam’s Udalguri District

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake at 9:03 AM IST. Its epicenter was located near Udalguri, close to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Because the quake was shallow, it created stronger tremors. Residents in Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Darrang, and Baksa felt the shockwaves. Mild tremors also reached parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

In Nagaon, a viral video showed nurses shielding newborns during the shaking. Their quick response won praise across social media platforms.

“We didn’t panic. We focused on protecting the babies first,” said one of the nurses at the Nagaon hospital.

Northeast’s High Seismic Risk

The Assam earthquake September 2025 highlights the vulnerability of the entire region. Assam and other northeastern states lie in Seismic Zone V, the highest-risk category in India. The Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect here, causing frequent seismic activity.

Although this quake caused no destruction, seismologists warned that stronger tremors could follow. Locals are urged to remain alert and follow disaster preparedness guidelines.

State Authorities on Alert After the Earthquake

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that no injuries or property loss have occurred. Inspection teams were dispatched to bridges, schools, and hospitals across affected districts.

“We’re on high alert and prepared for aftershocks,” an ASDMA official stated. “We request citizens to avoid spreading rumors and follow official channels for updates.”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a message via X (formerly Twitter), assuring residents that disaster response units are ready. He encouraged people to report any cracks in buildings or unusual ground activity.

Tremors Reach Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur

Apart from Assam, tremors spread into West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. In Manipur, reports came from Kangpokpi and Imphal West, where buildings vibrated slightly but stayed intact.

Local governments in these areas also issued alerts and asked people to stay away from old or damaged buildings for the next 24 hours.

Earthquake Preparedness: What You Should Do

Experts recommend the following safety steps after an earthquake:

Lessons from the Assam Earthquake September 2025

The Assam earthquake of September 2025 may not have caused direct harm, but it served as a warning. Frequent tremors remind us that the region must focus more on earthquake-resistant infrastructure, public awareness, and quick emergency response.
