Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled an ambitious development roadmap that aims to transform the state’s economy through large-scale investments in energy production, urban infrastructure, and employment generation. Speaking about the government’s long-term vision, the Chief Minister said Assam is targeting a power generation capacity of 8,457 megawatts (MW) while planning to create nearly one lakh jobs through the development of satellite towns.
The announcements reflect the state’s focus on strengthening infrastructure, promoting industrial growth, and improving urban planning. Sarma said Assam is moving beyond traditional development models and is preparing for rapid economic expansion driven by reliable electricity, modern urban centres, and employment opportunities.
According to the Chief Minister, the government’s development strategy seeks to position Assam as one of the leading growth engines in Northeast India by investing in sectors that generate long-term economic benefits.
Assam Sets Ambitious Power Generation Goal
Highlighting the state’s energy plans, Sarma said Assam aims to achieve a power generation capacity of 8,457 MW in the coming years. The target marks a significant increase over the state’s existing generation capacity and reflects the government’s efforts to meet rising electricity demand from households, industries, and commercial establishments.
The Chief Minister said reliable electricity remains one of the key requirements for sustainable economic growth. As industries expand and urbanisation accelerates, the demand for uninterrupted power continues to rise. The government therefore plans to strengthen Assam’s energy infrastructure by encouraging investments in power generation and transmission.
He added that expanding electricity generation will not only improve energy security but also attract industries looking for dependable power supply.
Reliable Power to Support Industrial Growth
Sarma said adequate electricity plays a crucial role in industrial development. Manufacturing units, technology parks, commercial establishments, and service industries require a stable power supply to operate efficiently.
The government believes that increasing power generation capacity will create a favourable environment for new investments in Assam. Better electricity infrastructure can reduce operational challenges for businesses and encourage companies to establish manufacturing and industrial facilities in the state.
The Chief Minister noted that industrial growth would also generate employment opportunities while strengthening Assam’s overall economy.
He added that improved power availability would benefit both urban and rural areas by supporting businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and public services.
Satellite Towns to Generate One Lakh Jobs
Alongside its energy plans, the government has placed significant emphasis on developing satellite towns around major urban centres. According to Sarma, these planned urban centres have the potential to create nearly one lakh employment opportunities across different sectors.
The satellite towns will help accommodate population growth while reducing pressure on existing cities. They will include residential areas, commercial spaces, industrial zones, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and public infrastructure designed to support modern urban living.
The Chief Minister said these townships will become centres of economic activity by attracting businesses, industries, and service providers. As economic activity expands, employment opportunities will also increase across multiple sectors.
He said the government’s objective is not only to build new urban centres but also to create sustainable communities with quality infrastructure and better living conditions.
Planned Urbanisation to Drive Development
Sarma stressed that planned urbanisation is essential for Assam’s future growth. Instead of allowing cities to expand without proper planning, the government wants to develop well-designed satellite towns equipped with modern infrastructure.
These urban centres will improve connectivity, reduce congestion in major cities, and support balanced regional development. They will also offer improved housing, transportation, healthcare, education, and recreational facilities.
The Chief Minister said planned urban development will make Assam more attractive for investors while improving the quality of life for residents.
He added that satellite towns can become important economic hubs that complement the growth of existing cities rather than compete with them.
Employment Opportunities Across Multiple Sectors
The proposed satellite towns are expected to create jobs across construction, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, education, hospitality, logistics, information technology, and public services.
Large-scale infrastructure development will generate employment during the construction phase. Once operational, businesses, institutions, and industries established within these towns will create long-term jobs for skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Sarma said employment generation remains one of the government’s highest priorities. The administration aims to create an environment where young people can find opportunities within Assam instead of seeking employment elsewhere.
He expressed confidence that infrastructure development and industrial investment would together contribute significantly to job creation over the coming years.
Infrastructure Development Remains Central to Growth
The Chief Minister said infrastructure development continues to form the backbone of Assam’s economic strategy. Along with electricity generation and urban development, the government has invested heavily in roads, bridges, transport networks, healthcare institutions, and educational facilities.
According to him, modern infrastructure improves connectivity, reduces business costs, and encourages private investment. Better public facilities also improve the quality of life for citizens while supporting long-term economic growth.
Sarma said the government will continue expanding infrastructure across both urban and rural areas to ensure balanced development throughout the state.
Government Focuses on Investment and Economic Expansion
The Assam government has consistently promoted the state as an emerging investment destination. The Chief Minister said reliable electricity, modern urban infrastructure, and improved connectivity are key factors that influence investors’ decisions.
He noted that the government’s policies aim to create a business-friendly environment by strengthening infrastructure and simplifying investment processes. Better industrial facilities and urban planning will encourage both domestic and international companies to establish operations in Assam.
According to Sarma, increased investment will support manufacturing, services, logistics, tourism, and other sectors that contribute to economic diversification.
Long-Term Vision for a Developed Assam
The Chief Minister said the state’s development strategy focuses on creating sustainable economic growth rather than short-term gains. Investments in power generation, satellite towns, and public infrastructure will strengthen Assam’s economy over the long term.
He emphasised that reliable electricity, employment opportunities, and planned urbanisation are closely connected. Strong infrastructure attracts industries, industries create jobs, and growing employment improves living standards.
The government believes this integrated approach will help Assam emerge as one of the fastest-growing states in the region while improving opportunities for future generations.
Assam Moves Towards a New Growth Phase
With a target of generating 8,457 MW of power and creating one lakh jobs through satellite towns, the Assam government has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the state’s future.
The twin focus on expanding electricity generation and developing modern urban centres reflects the government’s commitment to building a stronger economy supported by quality infrastructure and sustainable employment.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state will continue investing in projects that improve public infrastructure, attract industries, and create opportunities for its people. As these initiatives progress, Assam aims to strengthen its position as a major economic and industrial hub in Northeast India while ensuring balanced and inclusive development.
