BPF Sweeps Bodoland Territorial Council Elections with 28 Seats

The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has registered a decisive victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in Assam, securing 28 out of the 40 seats. The result marks a significant comeback for the party led by Hagrama Mohilary, giving it an absolute majority in the new council.

In the previous 2020 elections, the BPF had managed to win only 17 seats. Despite being the single largest party then, it was unable to form the council as the United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL), backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), had joined hands to take charge of the administration. This time, however, the BPF has improved its tally substantially, re-establishing itself as the dominant political force in Bodoland.

The election results saw UPPL restricted to just seven seats, while the BJP, also a constituent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), managed to secure five seats. The outcome has significantly reduced their influence in the council compared to the last term.

Hagrama Mohilary himself contested from two constituencies. He emerged victorious in Debargaon, strengthening his position within the BPF, but lost the Chirangduar seat. Meanwhile, outgoing BTC chief and UPPL president Pramod Boro achieved success in Goimari, though he faced defeat in Dotma, reflecting mixed fortunes for the UPPL leadership.

The BTC elections were conducted on September 22, 2025, across five districts—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and Tamulpur. Polling took place peacefully, and the Election Commission confirmed that no repolls were necessary, underlining the smooth conduct of the democratic exercise.

The outcome highlights a significant shift in the political landscape of Bodoland. By securing an absolute majority, the BPF has regained full control of the council, reinforcing its position as the most influential political group in the region. For the UPPL and BJP, the results are a setback, as their combined strength is far less compared to the previous term when they formed the ruling alliance.

Political analysts suggest that the BPF’s success can be attributed to its strong grassroots connect and the leadership of Mohilary, who has consistently remained a key figure in Bodoland politics. The victory not only strengthens the party’s role in regional governance but also positions it more firmly within the NDA alliance at the state and national levels.

With the new council in place, the BPF is expected to focus on development, peace, and stability across the Bodoland Territorial Region, ensuring that the concerns of the people in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and Tamulpur are addressed effectively.

The sweeping victory has once again placed Hagrama Mohilary and the BPF at the center of political activity in Bodoland, marking a new chapter in the region’s governance.
