The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reported strong progress in helping citizens of Tripura trace and recover lost or stolen mobile phones through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The portal operates under the Government of India’s Sanchar Saathi initiative.
Officials said the CEIR system has not only helped users recover devices but also strengthened measures to prevent misuse of stolen handsets.

Over 3,000 Devices Reported on CEIR Portal
Since CEIR services began in Tripura, many citizens have used the portal to report lost or stolen phones. As of February 17, 2026, users had reported 3,054 mobile handsets on the state’s CEIR portal.
Out of these, authorities have identified and recovered 518 devices. Officials said this recovery rate reflects improved coordination among telecom service providers and law enforcement agencies.
How the CEIR System Works
The CEIR platform allows users to block lost or stolen phones quickly. Once blocked, the device cannot function on any telecom network in India. This step prevents misuse, including fraudulent calls and cybercrime activities.
If someone reactivates the blocked handset on a network, the system tracks it. Authorities then alert the concerned law enforcement agency for further action.
After recovery, users can easily unblock their phones through the same portal. This process ensures seamless restoration of services without additional complications.
Strong Coordination Boosts Results
The DoT credited the success of CEIR in Tripura to strong cooperation between telecom service providers (TSPs) and state police. Real-time coordination has improved the speed of tracing and recovery operations.
In addition, awareness campaigns have encouraged more citizens to use digital platforms to report theft or loss. As a result, more people now take immediate action instead of waiting or filing delayed complaints.
Officials said early reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering devices.
Curbing Cybercrime and Illegal Trade
Beyond consumer protection, the CEIR system plays a vital role in curbing mobile-related cybercrime. Stolen handsets often serve as tools for fraud, impersonation, and financial scams.
By blocking such devices nationwide, the system discourages illegal resale and dismantles black-market networks. Moreover, it strengthens national digital security by ensuring only legitimate devices operate on telecom networks.
Authorities believe the system also helps reduce organized theft, as blocked phones lose market value.
Citizens Urged to Report Immediately
The Department of Telecommunications has urged citizens to report lost or stolen mobile phones without delay through the official CEIR portal (www.ceir.gov.in).
Officials emphasised that quick action increases recovery chances and prevents misuse. They also encouraged users to keep their mobile IMEI numbers safe, as this detail is required for filing complaints.
Commitment to Secure Telecom Services
The DoT reaffirmed its commitment to expanding secure digital services across the country. It said initiatives like CEIR under Sanchar Saathi demonstrate the government’s focus on consumer protection and digital safety.
With over 500 devices already recovered in Tripura, authorities expect higher recovery numbers as awareness grows. The department aims to strengthen coordination further and ensure safer telecom services for citizens nationwide.
