Northeast Policy Research Centre Opens at St. Joseph Ukhrul

Northeast Policy Research Centre

In a major step toward academic and policy-oriented regional development, St. Joseph College, Ukhrul has officially inaugurated the Centre for Northeast Development and Policy Research (CNDP). The center aims to become a think tank dedicated to generating actionable insights on the social, economic, and political challenges of Northeast India.

This launch represents a visionary initiative at the intersection of education, research, and regional policymaking, positioning Ukhrul as a growing hub for intellectual dialogue and policy innovation in the Northeast.

Centre for Northeast Development and Policy Research: A Milestone for Ukhrul

The Centre for Northeast Development and Policy Research was inaugurated by prominent academicians, policymakers, and church leaders. The event drew participation from across Manipur and neighboring states, signaling strong regional interest in knowledge-based growth.

“This is not just a college event—it’s a region-wide initiative,” said Dr. David Shimray, Principal of St. Joseph College. “We want this center to provide research-backed solutions for the unique issues facing Northeast India.”

Core Focus Areas of CNDP:

Driving Regional Policy Through Local Research

At its core, the Centre for Northeast Development and Policy Research seeks to generate localized, field-based research that can inform policymakers and civil society leaders. Faculty and students will work on case studies, data analysis, and white papers on urgent issues facing the region.

Why This Center Matters for Northeast India

The Northeast has long been underrepresented in national policy circles. Initiatives like this center aim to amplify indigenous voices and promote data-driven policymaking from within the region itself.

“Real solutions can only come from people who live and breathe these issues,” noted Prof. Thangli Zimik, research head of the new center.

Collaborations, Fellowships, and Cross-Border Dialogue

The CNDP is expected to foster collaboration with national and international institutions, NGOs, and academic networks. Plans are already underway to:

“We envision this center becoming a beacon for research in the entire Southeast Asian neighborhood,” said Sr. Rebecca Vaiphei, one of the project advisors.

Ukhrul’s Emerging Role in Academic Excellence

With this initiative, Ukhrul is positioning itself as a regional knowledge center. St. Joseph College, already known for its work in humanities and tribal studies, is now expanding into public policy and development studies.
