Centre Notifies New FRRO Offices in Agartala and Kohima, Expands Network to 20

The Central Government has notified three new Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs) in Agartala, Tripura; Kohima, Nagaland; and Bhubaneswar, Odisha. With this expansion, India now has 20 FRRO offices across the country, according to a government statement issued on November 2.

The move aims to improve immigration services for foreign nationals visiting India for tourism, medical treatment and education. It also seeks to strengthen the monitoring of visa conditions and compliance with immigration laws. The expansion follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive to establish at least one FRRO in every state capital.

Key Facts

Agartala and Kohima Get Independent FRRO Offices

The newly notified FRRO offices in Agartala and Kohima were previously under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata FRRO. Similarly, Bhubaneswar operated under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad FRRO.

The new offices will bring immigration-related services closer to foreign nationals and local authorities in these states. As a result, visitors and residents dealing with registration and visa-related matters may benefit from improved administrative access.

Centre Plans Further Expansion

The latest notification follows a broader plan to establish an FRRO in every state capital. Five additional offices have already started functioning since 2025 in Jaipur, Chandigarh, Aizawl, Amravati and Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the government is considering further expansion in states that do not yet have dedicated FRRO offices. These include Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya.

The proposed expansion could improve immigration administration across more regions, particularly in states where foreign nationals previously depended on offices located elsewhere.

India Now Has 20 FRRO Offices

According to the government statement, the 20 FRRO offices are located in Ahmedabad, Amravati, Amritsar, Aizawl, Agartala, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Chandigarh, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kohima, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai and Trivandrum.

These offices play an important role in managing the registration and immigration-related requirements of foreign nationals.

Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025

The government also highlighted the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which brought together four earlier laws governing immigration and foreign nationals under one legal framework.

The Act regulates the entry, stay, movement and departure of foreign nationals in India. Under this framework, the Bureau of Immigration performs key immigration functions with assistance from FRROs authorised by the Central Government.

FRROs monitor compliance with immigration rules and handle cases involving visa violations and overstaying. They also coordinate legal action and penalties wherever required.
