Agartala: The Centre has clarified that the 2027 Census will not publish separate statistics for the ‘Tripura’ tribe or sub-entries covered under the notified Scheduled Tribe category. The clarification followed a request from the Directorate of Census Operations, Tripura. The directorate had sought separate enumeration and publication of data on the ‘Tripura’ tribe and Tripura language. However, the Centre said Census officials will follow the officially notified Scheduled Tribe list. Meanwhile, respondents will provide their mother tongue during enumeration based on the language they report.

Centre Responds to Tripura Census Request
The Directorate of Census Operations, Tripura, submitted a representation seeking separate data for the ‘Tripura’ tribe and Tripura language.
Following the request, the Centre reiterated its existing approach to Scheduled Tribe enumeration. Officials will follow the officially notified list of Scheduled Tribes during the Census.
The Assistant Registrar General (Social Studies), Anu Bhavana, referred to an earlier communication dated June 18, 2026, while responding to the directorate.
‘Tripura, Tripuri, Tipra’ Has One ST Entry
According to the Centre, ‘Tripura, Tripuri, Tipra’ appears at serial number 18 in the notified Scheduled Tribe list for Tripura.
However, the Centre said Census authorities do not publish separate statistics for sub-entries that fall under one main Scheduled Tribe entry.
Therefore, the 2027 Census will follow the existing notified structure when officials compile and publish Scheduled Tribe data.
Mother Tongue Data Will Come From Respondents
The Centre also explained how officials will collect language information during the Census.
During enumeration, each respondent will provide the name of their mother tongue. Officials will record the language according to the response given by that person.
As a result, the mother tongue data will reflect the language names reported by respondents during the Census.

The clarification sets out the Centre’s position on the demand for separate publication of statistics for the ‘Tripura’ tribe and Tripura language.
