The Chakma council in Mizoram will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) from the 2027-28 academic session and introduce a weekly Mizo Speaking Day in its schools. The decisions aim to align school education in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) with the policy framework followed by the Mizoram government.
The council will observe every Wednesday as Mizo Speaking Day in all primary and middle schools under its jurisdiction. The initiative will give students regular opportunities to learn and practise Mizo, according to an official statement reported on September 28.
Chakma council sets NEP rollout from 2027-28
The decisions were taken during a meeting on educational administration at the CADC headquarters in Kamalanagar on Sunday. Doymoy Daveng Chakma, Executive Member in charge of Education, chaired the meeting.
The Chakma council decided to adopt and implement NEP from the 2027-28 academic session in line with the policy framework and guidelines of the Mizoram government. The District School Education Board (DSEB) and concerned education departments will now undertake preparatory work and issue implementation guidelines.
The move follows other education-related preparations already under way in the council area. The CADC has also decided that common question examinations for Classes III, V, VI and VII will begin from the 2027-28 academic session.
Mizo Speaking Day planned every Wednesday
Under the new language initiative, schools will observe every Wednesday as Mizo Speaking Day. The programme will cover primary and middle schools across the CADC area.
A committee headed by Primary Education Department Office Superintendent Satish Chakma has been formed to prepare guidelines and modalities for the programme. Therefore, the committee will play a key role in determining how schools conduct the weekly language activity.
The Chakma council has also previously received a proposal to introduce Mizo as a subject in schools within its jurisdiction. In August, the Kamalanagar Private Schools Association urged the council to consider the proposal and sought the recruitment of Mizo language teachers.
Teacher rules also under review
The education meeting also approved in principle the draft Chakma Autonomous District Council (Transfer and Posting of Elementary School Teachers) Rules, 2026.
A review committee headed by education officer Punya Jagat Talukdar will examine the draft rules. The committee has been tasked with finalising its review by October 10 before placing the proposal before the executive committee.
The Chakma council has therefore linked the latest decisions with wider efforts to strengthen education administration. The official CADC website has highlighted teacher development, attendance, retention, dropout prevention and academic leadership among its current education priorities.
Literacy programme and school meditation plan
The meeting also resolved to launch a systematic literacy programme in CADC. However, the programme remains subject to approval from the executive committee and the availability of funds.
Additionally, the Chakma council plans to introduce 10 minutes of Anapana meditation every Friday in primary and middle schools. The proposal forms part of a broader set of measures discussed for school education in the autonomous council.
These decisions come as CADC continues to work on education infrastructure and administrative reforms. In August, the council said two education infrastructure projects were under process for inclusion in the state’s priority list. If implemented, those projects could support the construction of 20 to 25 new school buildings in the area.
Education reforms enter a new phase
The Chakma council now faces the task of translating the latest decisions into practical school-level measures. NEP implementation will require preparation by the DSEB and education departments, while the Mizo Speaking Day initiative will depend on clear guidelines for schools and teachers.
Moreover, the council’s recent education measures indicate a focus on curriculum, examinations, teacher administration, language learning and school infrastructure. The CADC exercises legislative, executive and judicial powers over allotted departments within its territory under the Sixth Schedule framework.
With NEP implementation scheduled for 2027-28, preparations will determine how smoothly the policy reaches schools across the CADC. Meanwhile, the weekly Mizo Speaking Day will add a regular language-learning component to the school calendar.
