Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday praised the swift progress of the state’s only government dental college. He described it as a “remarkable institution” that has made strong contributions to education, healthcare and medical services within a short time.
Addressing the third foundation day celebration of Agartala Government Dental College at Muktadhara Auditorium, Dr. Saha said the institution marked a historic milestone for Tripura. According to him, the college fulfilled a long-standing demand of the people for advanced dental education and treatment facilities within the state.
Inauguration and Foundation Stone Laid
During the event, the Chief Minister inaugurated the earthquake-resistant renovation and restoration work of the old IGM Hospital building. Later, he laid the foundation stone for new buildings of both the dental college and IGM Hospital.
Dr. Saha said the journey of the government dental college began in 2023. He credited the progress to proactive efforts by the state government and consistent support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a result, students now receive quality dental education, while residents benefit from modern oral healthcare services.

Growing Academic Capacity
Reflecting on past achievements, the Chief Minister said earlier governments failed to establish a dental college despite long-standing demands. However, after assuming office in 2018, the present government placed healthcare and education at the top of its agenda.
The college started its Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course in the 2023–24 academic session with an intake of 50 students. Since then, authorities have increased the intake to 63 seats, showing steady academic expansion.
Dr. Saha noted that the institution has already earned recognition beyond the state. He added that improved infrastructure and academic standards continue to strengthen its reputation nationwide.
Focus on Infrastructure and Heritage
The Chief Minister assured that the government remains committed to infrastructure development across the health sector. He said the renovation of the historic IGM Hospital would preserve its heritage while ensuring modern facilities. At the same time, authorities will complete the new construction within a fixed timeline.
Speaking about foundation day celebrations, Dr. Saha said such events inspire both students and faculty. He urged them to protect the institution’s reputation through innovation, discipline and dedication.
Message to Students and Doctors
Addressing students directly, the Chief Minister encouraged them to nurture their skills with sincerity and hard work. He reminded aspiring doctors of their responsibility toward society.
“A doctor must serve all patients without discrimination. Service-mindedness should guide the medical profession,” he said. He also reaffirmed the government’s resolve to make healthcare accessible to every section of society.
Dr. Saha added that Tripura continues to make progress in healthcare, education and legal services under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
