Corruption Cases Surge in Assam: NCRB Data Reveals Disturbing Trend

A recent analysis of data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has uncovered a significant rise in corruption-related cases in Assam during 2022, marking a stark contrast to the figures from the previous two years.

This year, Assam reported 57 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and associated sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a substantial increase compared to the 16 cases reported in both 2020 and 2021. Despite the rise in reported cases, an alarming 95 percent of the 57 cases remained pending before the courts by the end of last year.

According to the NCRB data, out of the cases registered in the preceding year, 50 involved trap cases, where government officials were apprehended in the act of accepting bribes. The remaining cases were related to disproportionate assets (four cases) and criminal misconduct (three cases).

Last year saw the arrest of 58 individuals in these corruption cases, with charge sheets filed against 45 accused. The conviction rate stood at 66.7 percent, with two persons convicted, one acquitted, and two facing imprisonment or significant punishment. Notably, no accused was dismissed or removed from service.

Regarding the police’s handling of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the data revealed that 109 cases were pending investigation from the previous year. Final reports were submitted in 13 cases, and charge sheets were filed in 37 cases. As of the end of 2022, 116 cases were still under investigation, with a conviction rate of 66.7 percent.

The NCRB report also highlighted that 74 cases were pending trial at the end of last year, with the court disposing of four cases during the same period. This surge in corruption-related cases underscores the need for vigilant anti-corruption measures and efficient judicial processes in Assam.
