The State Police Crime Branch has achieved a major breakthrough in the high-profile Jirania Phensedyl seizure case with the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Deep Prakash Gupta. The development marks a significant step forward in unraveling one of the state’s most sensational drug trafficking cases.
Police sources said Gupta, a resident of Delhi, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh after sustained surveillance. The Crime Branch brought him to the state for further investigation. Authorities are expected to produce him before a local court today.

Case That Shocked the State
The Jirania case attracted statewide attention after police recovered a massive consignment of Phensedyl cough syrup from a railway wagon. The seizure exposed the scale of illegal drug movement through the region.
Investigators later revealed that the operation had links beyond state borders. Officials described it as part of a larger international drug trafficking network, raising serious concerns about organized smuggling routes.
Gupta’s Alleged Role in the Smuggling Network
According to investigators, Deep Prakash Gupta played a key role in planning and coordinating the smuggling operation. Police believe he managed logistics and distribution channels linked to the illegal consignment.
Officials said Gupta’s interrogation could reveal critical information about other members of the racket. They expect leads on funding sources, transport routes, and cross-border connections.
Four Arrests Made So Far
With Gupta’s arrest, the total number of arrests in the case has reached four. Among those already in custody is Mantanu Saha, who was arrested after returning from Dubai.
During searches at Saha’s residence, Crime Branch officers recovered several incriminating documents. On Wednesday, officials also raided his warehouse near the Amtali Bypass, where they seized additional materials believed to be linked to the smuggling operation.
Key Accused on the Run
Despite these arrests, the investigation continues to face challenges. One of the prime suspects, Apu Das of Bormura, has reportedly fled to Chattogram, Bangladesh, to evade arrest.
Sources alleged that Das received protection from certain police officials, BSF personnel, and even a sitting legislator. These claims have added a controversial dimension to the case and complicated enforcement efforts.
Another Suspect Evades Arrest
In a related development, Crime Branch officials conducted a raid at the residence of Apu Ranjan Das in Boxanagar on November 11, 2025. The team recovered several documents during the search.
However, Apu Ranjan Das managed to escape before police could arrest him. Investigators believe he may have links to the broader trafficking network under scrutiny.
Probe Intensified, More Arrests Likely
The Crime Branch has now intensified its investigation, focusing on the entire supply chain and its international links. Officials said they are coordinating with multiple agencies to track absconding suspects and identify hidden operatives.
Authorities remain confident that continued interrogation and document analysis will expose more individuals involved in the racket. The crackdown, police said, aims to dismantle the network completely and prevent similar operations in the future.
