Dharmanagar Political Violence: Congress Raises Alarm

Tension erupted in Dharmanagar on Thursday after attackers targeted Congress workers and vandalised the local party office. Congress Legislature Party leader Birajit Sinha called the situation a “reign of terror” and said he would brief Chief Minister Manik Saha.

Clash at Police Office

The unrest began when a group of people, believed to be BJP supporters, stormed the North Tripura Superintendent of Police’s office. Sinha and a Congress delegation were meeting to discuss the town’s law and order issues. Police quickly intervened and dispersed the crowd, preventing further escalation.

Congress Office Vandalised

Earlier this week, intruders broke into the Dharmanagar Congress office, damaged furniture, and set some items on fire.

Injuries Reported Among Opposition Workers

Sinha said factional conflicts within the ruling party had destabilised the town for weeks. He added that the attacks targeted opposition workers, including members of Congress and CPI(M).

“One of our workers fractured his hand, and another suffered head injuries,” Sinha said. “Six to seven CPI(M) workers also sustained injuries, and many had to move to Agartala or Silchar for advanced treatment.”

Demand for Strict Action

The Congress leader demanded that authorities punish the attackers. He stressed the need to protect political workers and curb violence in the BJP-led state.

Rising Concern Over Political Violence

Opposition parties frequently report attacks on their offices and workers in Tripura. This latest incident in Dharmanagar has intensified scrutiny of the state government’s law and order management.

Residents remain anxious about safety as political tensions persist. Analysts warn that continued violence could influence the political climate in North Tripura, especially with upcoming elections.

Sinha’s appeal highlights the urgent need for the government to ensure security and uphold democratic processes in Tripura.
