Dimapur Station Upgrade: Nagaland BJP Pushes for Quick Action

Nagaland BJP leaders request Dimapur station upgrade from railway minister

In a significant move to accelerate the long-awaited Dimapur station upgrade, top BJP leaders from Nagaland have met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Their meeting emphasized the urgent need for modernizing the station to improve passenger experience and boost regional connectivity.

The appeal came during a high-level delegation visit led by BJP state president Benjamin Yepthomi. The delegation submitted a formal memorandum in Delhi, outlining the challenges faced by commuters and highlighting the potential benefits of modernizing the station.

BJP emphasizes poor infrastructure

According to the BJP leaders, Dimapur railway station—one of the busiest in the region—remains neglected despite its strategic importance. They pointed out that the infrastructure is outdated and lacks basic passenger amenities. These include clean waiting areas, digital display systems, lifts, and accessibility features for older people and persons with disabilities.

They said, “The station fails to meet the expectations of modern railway commuters. With Nagaland rapidly growing, the station’s infrastructure needs urgent attention.”

The delegation stressed that the station has not seen any significant upgrade in years. They urged the Railway Ministry to treat Dimapur as a priority in its next phase of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Push for Amrit Bharat Station Scheme inclusion

The BJP leaders requested that Dimapur station be included in the upcoming list of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This flagship scheme by Indian Railways aims to develop over 1,000 railway stations across the country with modern facilities, better design, and sustainable infrastructure.

According to the memorandum, the delegation stated, “Dimapur serves as a vital link between Nagaland and other northeastern states. A station upgrade would not only improve the daily life of commuters but also encourage tourism and investment.”

The leaders also said that Dimapur acts as the entry point to Nagaland for many tourists, pilgrims, and traders. They believe that a modern, clean, and accessible station would change public perception and make Nagaland more inviting.

Growing public demand for change

Public dissatisfaction with the current condition of the Dimapur station has grown in recent years. Frequent complaints about unhygienic platforms, poor lighting, and lack of security have been reported by passengers. Local citizens and student groups have also raised similar concerns.

Local BJP leaders believe that this demand aligns with the broader developmental vision of the Prime Minister. They noted that northeastern states have often lagged in infrastructure, and it’s time to bridge that gap.

BJP’s Benjamin Yepthomi said, “Our people deserve better. We are not asking for luxury, just dignity in travel. A simple modernization effort can go a long way.”

Strategic importance of Dimapur

Dimapur station is the main railway access point for Nagaland and parts of neighboring Manipur and Assam. Located on the Lumding–Dibrugarh section, the station handles thousands of passengers daily. The station also supports significant freight movement, including goods meant for Nagaland’s hill districts.

Due to its strategic position, the leaders emphasized that a station upgrade would serve a larger population beyond Dimapur. They highlighted that modern amenities could ease travel, especially for students, traders, and those seeking medical care in other states.

The BJP team argued that modernization would improve not just aesthetics but functionality. For example, seamless entry and exit, proper signage, and real-time train updates can help reduce travel stress and improve efficiency.

Economic and tourism potential

Nagaland is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for tourists. Events like the Hornbill Festival draw thousands every year. However, first impressions matter. A substandard station often deters visitors who expect basic comfort and hygiene.

Modernizing Dimapur station can transform tourism by offering an organized and tourist-friendly arrival point. The delegation told the minister that improved facilities would also help the hospitality and transport sectors in the region.

Business owners and local entrepreneurs echoed similar sentiments. Many believe that infrastructure upgrades like these have a direct impact on footfall and revenue.

Minister assures review

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw received the memorandum positively and assured the delegation that the matter would be reviewed at the earliest. While no immediate commitment was made, he acknowledged the strategic relevance of Dimapur station.

He also mentioned that the Railways is working on a long-term vision for the Northeast. Projects aimed at improving connectivity, passenger convenience, and regional development are underway in phases.

Final remarks

The Nagaland BJP’s proactive effort to seek central intervention reflects the growing demand for better infrastructure in the region. With the Northeast gradually gaining prominence in national development plans, the hope is that important hubs like Dimapur will not be left behind.

Until then, passengers wait with optimism, hoping that their daily travel experience becomes smoother, safer, and more dignified.
