Former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has come under legal scrutiny after an FIR was registered against her at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station over allegations of hurting religious sentiments. The development comes days after the party’s recent electoral setback and has sparked fresh political debate in the state.
Police officials confirmed that they received a complaint and registered a case in accordance with legal procedure. Authorities said investigators have begun examining the allegations and reviewing all issues mentioned in the complaint. At this stage, the registration of the FIR marks the beginning of a legal process and does not amount to any finding against Banerjee.
The complaint was filed by advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh, who alleged that statements made by Banerjee during two separate public appearances affected religious sentiments and required legal examination.

What Is The Exact Matter Behind The FIR?
According to police officials, advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh submitted her complaint on May 20, following which the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station registered an FIR. The complaint centres on two remarks allegedly made by Mamata Banerjee during separate public events.
As stated in the complaint, one remark was allegedly made during a religious event held in 2025, while the second statement was reportedly delivered at a protest gathering in Dharmatala ahead of Assembly elections. The complainant argued that both remarks deeply affected the sentiments and beliefs of Sanatani Hindus not only in India but also among people living abroad.
She further described the statements as provocative and unconstitutional in nature. According to the complaint, the remarks crossed acceptable public limits and therefore required legal intervention. The complaint requested authorities to examine whether the statements violated applicable legal provisions.
Police officials clarified that the allegations remain under investigation and authorities have not reached any conclusion regarding the claims made in the FIR.
Complainant Alleges Delay In Registration Of Complaint
Along with the allegations against Banerjee, the complainant also raised concerns about the complaint registration process.
Advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh claimed that police initially did not register her complaint immediately after submission. According to her statement, she had to repeatedly follow up with authorities before the FIR was finally accepted and formally recorded.
Police later confirmed that they had received the complaint and registered the case following procedural requirements. Officials also stated that the investigation would continue independently and that all relevant material connected to the complaint would undergo examination.
The complainant maintained that public figures should exercise responsibility while making statements that may affect religious sentiments. She argued that legal review was necessary because such remarks carry wider social implications.
Political Attention Grows Around The Controversy
The FIR has attracted attention not only because of the allegations but also because of the political context surrounding the development.
The case emerged shortly after recent electoral developments involving the Trinamool Congress, which led to increased discussion among political observers. Many analysts noted that complaints linked to public speeches often generate broader debates around political expression, accountability, and legal limits.
Supporters of the complaint argued that elected leaders and political figures should remain careful while addressing sensitive religious issues. They maintained that public statements can influence larger sections of society and therefore deserve scrutiny when concerns are raised.
At the same time, supporters of Mamata Banerjee may view the complaint differently and could choose to respond through legal or political channels. However, no official legal conclusion has emerged at this stage.
What Happens After An FIR Is Registered?
Under Indian law, registration of an FIR starts the formal process of investigation. It allows police to review allegations, gather relevant information, examine supporting material, and decide whether additional legal action becomes necessary.
Investigators may examine public records, contextual information, and statements connected to the complaint. Legal experts often point out that an FIR alone does not establish guilt and that the process must move through investigation before authorities reach any findings.
Police officials in Siliguri have stated that they are examining all aspects mentioned in the complaint and will proceed according to law.
Focus Turns To Investigation And Legal Process
With the FIR now registered, attention has shifted to the next phase of the legal process. Investigators are expected to review the statements referenced in the complaint and assess their context before making further decisions.
The controversy has already generated political and public discussion because it combines legal questions with issues related to public speech and religious sensitivity.
For now, authorities continue to emphasise that the matter remains under investigation and no determination has been made regarding the allegations. The future course of the case will depend on the findings of the inquiry and any subsequent legal developments arising from the complaint filed at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station.
