As the flood crisis deepens in Assam’s Margherita region, officials on Sunday, June 1, issued urgent advisories asking affected residents to move to higher and safer ground. Rising waters from overflowing rivers have submerged several villages, displacing numerous families and prompting emergency response measures.
Margherita Circle Officer Issues Urgent Appeal
Margherita Circle Officer Gyan Jyoti Dutta addressed the media on Sunday afternoon, providing a detailed update on the escalating flood situation. Dutta confirmed that several villages in the Margherita Co-District are now completely waterlogged due to continuous rainfall and swelling riverbanks.
“We appeal to residents in vulnerable zones to relocate to safer areas without delay,” he said. “Our primary concern is the safety of people. Teams have been deployed for rescue and relief, and temporary shelters are being arranged.”
Margherita flood evacuation is now a top priority for the Tinsukia district administration.
Villages Underwater, Families Displaced
Among the most affected areas are Lekhapani, Ledo, and Jagun. Local reports confirm that dozens of homes have been inundated, with families scrambling to save essential belongings. Fields and livestock have also suffered, worsening the plight of rural communities.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 3,000 people have been affected in the first 24 hours of the flood. Over 10 relief camps have been set up to accommodate evacuees from low-lying zones.
Administration Steps Up Relief and Rescue
Circle Officer Dutta said that rescue teams are working round-the-clock in partnership with local police, civil volunteers, and health workers. Food, water, and medical kits are being distributed across relief shelters.
“In case anyone refuses to move despite advisories, we may have to initiate forceful evacuation for their safety,” said an ASDMA official. The administration has also kept boats and emergency vehicles on standby.
Public Health Engineering (PHE) teams are working to supply clean drinking water, while veterinary officers have been asked to tend to stranded livestock.
Schools and Roads Affected
Due to waterlogging, many primary schools and roads across the region remain closed. This has cut off access to essential services, prompting residents to rely entirely on government assistance.
Transportation between Margherita and Digboi has also been disrupted, with submerged highways making movement risky.

Chief Minister Reviews Situation Remotely
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has reportedly been briefed on the Margherita floods. He has instructed Tinsukia district authorities to ensure “zero casualties” and has assured that sufficient funds will be allocated for immediate relief.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma said, “We are monitoring the flood situation in upper Assam. I urge citizens to cooperate with authorities and avoid risky areas.”
Margherita Flood Evacuation Drive Continues
The Margherita flood evacuation drive is being supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), with additional teams expected to reach the region soon. Volunteers are also playing a vital role in helping the elderly and children reach relief shelters safely.
Residents have been asked to stay tuned to local news and government alerts. Emergency contact numbers have been released across villages and panchayats.
