Former Assam DGP DN Dutta Passes Away at 77: A Tribute to a Stalwart Officer and Gentle Soul

The former Director General of Police (DGP) for Assam, Deepak Narayan Dutta, breathed his last on Sunday at the age of 77 in Hyderabad, Telangana. The Assam Police, led by DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh, mourns the loss of this distinguished IPS (retd.) officer and extends heartfelt condolences to his grieving family.

A Remarkable Journey of Service

Born on December 2, 1946, DN Dutta belonged to the 1971 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. His illustrious career included serving in various capacities, reaching its pinnacle when he assumed the role of Assam DGP in 2005 until his superannuation on December 31, 2006. Post-retirement, Dutta continued his service to the public as a member of the state police accountability commission and later as the state chief information commissioner.

An Exemplary Officer and Beyond

Widely acknowledged for his unimpeachable integrity, DN Dutta received the Governor’s Gold Medal in 1991 for his meritorious service. His commitment to duty remained unswerving despite facing personal challenges, including a battle with throat cancer in 1997, which led to the loss of his voice box. Despite these adversities, Dutta continued to serve with dedication, earning admiration for his unwavering commitment to the people of Assam.

Beyond his role as a strict and dedicated policeman, Dutta was a multifaceted individual. Before joining the police force, he served as a professor at the esteemed Cotton College in Guwahati. Known for his gentle approach, he became a guardian figure to the entire Assam police family, emphasizing family values and compassion.

Final Homage and Farewell

The mortal remains of the late IPS officer were flown from Hyderabad to the Assam police headquarters, where they arrived at 2 pm on Monday. The cremation ceremony is scheduled for the same day at 3.30 pm at the Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati. As a mark of respect, the flag at all Assam police units and organizations has been flown at half-mast.

Deepak Narayan Dutta will be remembered not only as an exceptional officer who served with distinction but also as a compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. His legacy of integrity, commitment, and kindness will continue to inspire generations within and beyond the Assam police community.
