Four back-to-back petrol bomb attacks targeted government offices and police establishments in Shillong between September 16 and the early hours of September 17, 2026.
The incidents triggered heightened security across Meghalaya’s capital. Police began examining CCTV footage and questioning people as part of the investigation.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the attacks. The identities of those responsible and their motive remain unknown.
The incidents took place at the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR), Lumdiengjri Police Station, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) and a traffic beat in Nongmynsong.
Mineral Resources Office Targeted First
The first reported incident took place at the Directorate of Mineral Resources office in Risa Colony on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, a petrol bomb was hurled at the premises around 3:30 pm. A private vehicle belonging to a DMR employee suffered damage during the incident.
Local residents helped put out the fire before it could spread further. The attack raised concerns because the office is a government establishment.
The incident also became the first in a series of attacks that continued into the night and early morning.
Petrol Bomb Hits Lumdiengjri Police Station
Later on Wednesday night, another attack targeted Lumdiengjri Police Station.
Police reported that the incident occurred at around 9:45 pm. A petrol bomb struck the rear portion of the officer-in-charge’s room.
The impact caused minor damage to window panes. There were no reports of injuries among police personnel.
The attack on a police facility added to concerns about the security of government and law-enforcement establishments in Shillong.
Health Services Campus Also Targeted
The third incident occurred during the early hours of Thursday at the Directorate of Health Services campus in Laitumkhrah.
The attack took place at around 3 am. A fire broke out on the premises after unidentified individuals used a petrol bomb.
Fire tenders reached the location and brought the situation under control. A vehicle parked at the health department premises caught fire, but authorities reported no injuries.
Police have included the incident in the wider investigation into the series of attacks across the city.
Traffic Beat Set on Fire in Nongmynsong
The fourth incident took place at a traffic beat in Nongmynsong at around 3:30 am on Thursday.
Police said the location lies on the road leading towards the BSF Meghalaya Frontier headquarters. The incident involved a fire at the police facility.
The four incidents occurred within a period of less than 24 hours. Their locations included both government offices and police establishments across Shillong.
Security Measures Intensified
Following the attacks, Meghalaya Police increased security across Shillong.
East Khasi Hills SP in-charge Traffic Hari Prasanth M R said police had increased foot patrolling and vehicle checks. Additional forces were also deployed, particularly around government offices in secluded areas.
Police also contacted government offices and issued instructions on security preparedness.
Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the affected areas. Police have also questioned several people and are checking the locations of individuals identified during the investigation.
Police Investigate Attackers and Motive
The investigation remains underway. Police have not publicly identified any group or individual as responsible for the attacks.
Officials are examining available CCTV footage and other evidence to establish how the incidents occurred and identify those involved.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home Affairs Prestone Tynsong said the police were taking steps to identify the attackers and determine their motives.
Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang also confirmed that the incidents were under investigation.
Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive so far. This leaves several aspects of the case open as investigators continue collecting evidence.
CM Visits Affected Government Office
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the Directorate of Mineral Resources office after the attack.
He was accompanied by the Chief Secretary and other officials during the visit. The Chief Minister assessed the situation and reviewed the damage caused by the incident.
He also announced compensation for the owner of the private vehicle damaged in the attack. In addition, he directed officials to install more CCTV cameras at government offices.
The steps aim to improve surveillance and strengthen security around government establishments.
