In a shocking incident, unidentified gunmen in an SUV launched an attack on the residence of a 78-year-old woman in Khagempalli, Imphal, Manipur, on Saturday night.
Details of the Attack
The assailants, arriving in a Gypsy, opened fire and lobbed two hand grenades at the house of Laishram Memcha, causing chaos and panic in the neighborhood.
Approximately 7-8 bullets were fired, penetrating the walls and windows of Memcha’s house. Despite the gunfire, no casualties were reported. The hand grenades, however, remained unexploded, adding to the residents’ fear.
CCTV footage revealed that around 5-6 gunmen were involved in the attack. They swiftly fled the scene in the white Gypsy after executing the assault.
Upon receiving the report, two teams of Manipur police, including the Imphal West district police commando and Singjamei police station, promptly responded to the incident. The Manipur police bomb detection and disposal squad safely removed the unexploded grenades from the premises.
A case has been registered in connection with the attack, and investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the assault.
Laishram Memcha, the target of the attack, expressed bewilderment over the incident, denying any monetary demands from extremist groups. She urged the attackers to come forward and clarify their motives, emphasizing the importance of dialogue for a peaceful resolution.
In response to the attack, a sit-in-protest was organized at Huidromleikai, Imphal, on Sunday afternoon, condemning the violence and demanding justice for the victim.
