In preparation for the highly revered Ambubachi Mahayog 2025 at the Kamakhya Temple, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, has issued a series of traffic restrictions to manage the anticipated surge of devotees and maintain smooth vehicular movement.
The curbs will be in place from June 22 to June 25, and are aimed at ensuring public safety, efficient traffic flow. Also, and spiritual order during the grand annual pilgrimage.
Key Roads to be Regulated
Although, the following routes will be either closed or regulated based on crowd conditions:
- Kamakhya Gate to Temple premises: Closed to private vehicles from 4 AM to 8 PM. Only emergency vehicles and official pass-holders allowed.
- Maligaon to Kamakhya foothills: Restricted access during peak hours.
- Fancy Bazaar via Nilachal Hill Road: Diverted towards Jalukbari.
Public transport will have designated drop-off points at foothill areas. However, Pedestrians can proceed from there via marked trails.
Special Parking Zones
To reduce congestion, temporary parking zones have been arranged:
- Jalukbari Playground
- Bharalumukh Ghat area
- Maligaon Railway Institute Field
Only buses and e-rickshaws ferrying pilgrims will be permitted beyond these points.
Movement Guidelines for Residents and Commuters
The traffic advisory includes entry/exit routes, also, one-way declarations, and no-parking zones across the Kamakhya area.
Residents of Nilachal Hill must present valid IDs at checkpoints. Also, those commuting to work in the area are urged to use public transport.
Private vehicle owners are advised to avoid the temple approach roads between 5 AM and 6 PM.
Police Urge Public Cooperation
DCP (Traffic) Prasanta Saikia appealed to citizens for patience and cooperation during the four-day spiritual gathering.
“We request Guwahatians to avoid unnecessary travel in Kamakhya-bound areas and follow traffic advisories. Pilgrims’ safety and smooth movement are our top priorities,” he stated.
Crowd Expected to Cross 25 Lakh
The Ambubachi Mahayog is one of the largest religious gatherings in eastern India. In 2024, the event drew over 22 lakh devotees. Further, this year, officials expect the number to cross 25 lakh.
The administration has coordinated with health departments, disaster response teams, and civil volunteers to manage footfall and emergencies.
Devotees Advised to Plan Ahead
Authorities recommend that pilgrims plan their travel early. Moreover, preferably before 8 AM or after 6 PM. And, make use of state-run buses and designated foot routes.
Local NGOs and youth groups will assist at checkpoints and help with hydration and first aid.
CM Sarma Reviews Readiness
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma held a review meeting earlier this week with senior officials. Further, instructed all departments to ensure seamless arrangements.
He tweeted:
“Ambubachi Mahayog is not just a religious event, it’s a symbol of Assam’s spiritual heritage. We are working 24×7 to ensure a smooth and sacred experience for all devotees.”
