North Tripura witnessed severe weather conditions today as heavy rainfall lashed the region, accompanied by a sudden and intense hailstorm. Several areas, especially Dharmanagar, experienced significant disruption due to the extreme weather.
According to local reports, the downpour began earlier in the day and intensified by afternoon, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas. The situation worsened when a heavy hailstorm struck Dharmanagar and nearby localities, covering roads, rooftops, and open fields with layers of ice.
Residents described the hailstorm as unusually strong, with large ice pellets falling continuously for several minutes. “It looked like snowfall for a while. The roads were completely covered in ice,” said a local resident of Dharmanagar.
The sudden weather change caused inconvenience to daily life. Traffic movement slowed down due to slippery road conditions, and several small shops and roadside vendors were forced to shut operations temporarily. In some areas, minor damage to tin roofs and crops has also been reported.
Farmers in parts of North Tripura expressed concern over potential crop damage, as the hailstorm occurred during a sensitive period for agricultural activities. Officials are expected to assess the extent of losses in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted unstable weather conditions in parts of the Northeast, including Tripura, due to changing atmospheric patterns. Today’s events appear to be a result of those developing conditions.
Local authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather, and stay indoors during thunderstorms and hailstorms.
Meanwhile, visuals and videos from Dharmanagar showing ice-covered streets and rooftops are being widely shared on social media, drawing attention to the intensity of the storm.
Weather conditions are expected to remain partly unstable over the next 24 hours, with possibilities of further rain in isolated areas. Residents are urged to stay updated with official weather advisories.
