Himanta Biswa Sarma Will End Up in Jail, Says Gaurav Gogoi as He Targets Assam CM Over Corruption and Power Tariff Hike

‘Himanta Biswa Sarma will end up in jail': Gaurav Gogoi targets Assam CM over corruption, power tariff hike

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has launched a fresh political attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He accused the BJP-led government of corruption, financial mismanagement and placing additional burdens on ordinary electricity consumers. Gogoi also claimed that Sarma could face legal consequences if the Congress forms a government at the Centre.

On November 4, 2026, Gogoi shared a strongly worded post on social media platform X. He alleged that the Assam Chief Minister feared the possibility of a Congress government at the Centre. The Congress leader claimed that such a political change could bring several alleged cases of corruption and other crimes into the public domain.

His remarks have intensified the political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP in Assam. Gogoi also questioned the state government’s decision to recover additional power purchase costs from electricity consumers.

Gaurav Gogoi Warns Himanta Biswa Sarma of Legal Consequences

In his social media post, Gogoi claimed that the Assam Chief Minister was worried about a possible change in the central government.

He wrote that Sarma was “losing sleep imagining a Congress government at the centre”. The Congress leader further alleged that several undisclosed cases involving crimes and corruption could come to light under a Congress-led government.

Gogoi added that the Chief Minister knew he could end up in jail over these alleged activities.

The remarks reflect the growing political tensions between the two leaders. Gogoi, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has repeatedly questioned the BJP government’s governance and financial decisions in Assam.

However, these statements represent political allegations made by the Congress leader. They do not establish any criminal finding against the Chief Minister.

Congress Leader Criticises Assam’s Power Tariff Hike

Apart from the corruption allegations, Gogoi strongly criticised the Assam government’s recent decision to increase the financial burden on electricity consumers.

He described the move as Himanta Biswa Sarma’s “Diwali gift” to the people of Assam. The Congress leader questioned why ordinary households must bear additional expenses while the government continues to announce welfare schemes and political initiatives.

According to Gogoi, Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) will recover an accumulated power purchase cost of Rs 155.59 crore from consumers over the next five months.

This recovery will pass the additional cost directly to electricity consumers. As a result, households across the state could face higher electricity bills during the recovery period.

Gogoi argued that the government should protect ordinary consumers from additional financial pressure. He also questioned the administration’s priorities and its approach towards managing the state’s electricity expenses.

Gogoi Questions Assam Government’s Financial Priorities

The Congress leader also raised concerns over Assam’s growing debt and public spending.

He questioned how the government could continue allocating thousands of crores of rupees to beneficiary schemes while asking ordinary people to shoulder additional electricity costs.

Gogoi argued that public funds appeared readily available for political campaigns, election promises and welfare announcements. However, he claimed that the government continued to shift the burden of financial management onto common citizens.

He suggested that the administration must explain its spending priorities and provide greater transparency about the state’s financial position.

The Congress leader also questioned whether the government’s development claims reflected the everyday experiences of ordinary residents.

According to him, rising electricity expenses and growing financial liabilities have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the state’s development model.

Adani Power Agreement Draws Fresh Criticism

Gogoi also targeted the Assam government’s 3,200 MW power purchase agreement with Adani Power.

He raised concerns about provisions in the agreement that could expose APDCL to substantial financial liabilities. In particular, he questioned the arrangement concerning compensation for potential losses if the company generates surplus electricity.

According to Gogoi, these provisions could create a significant financial burden for the state.

Citing an investigative report, the Congress leader claimed that the agreement could expose Assam to an estimated liability of Rs 12,566 crore over five years.

He argued that the government must explain the financial implications of such a large agreement. He also questioned whether the arrangement adequately protects the interests of electricity consumers and taxpayers.

Gogoi accused the BJP government of prioritising corporate interests while transferring financial costs to ordinary people.

His criticism has brought renewed attention to the financial terms of the power agreement and the long-term responsibilities that it could create for the state.

Congress Attacks BJP’s Assam Development Model

Gogoi also questioned the development narrative promoted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He argued that the government frequently highlights infrastructure projects, welfare programmes and economic achievements. However, he claimed that rising electricity costs and increasing public liabilities tell a different story.

In his social media post, Gogoi sarcastically referred to the Chief Minister’s widely promoted AI-generated dancing videos.

He questioned whether higher electricity expenses, growing debt and corporate agreements represented the development model that Sarma continued to advertise.

The Congress leader suggested that the government should focus on improving the financial conditions of ordinary households rather than promoting political achievements.

His remarks also form part of the Congress party’s broader effort to challenge the BJP government’s record on governance, public spending and economic management.

Political Tensions Between Congress and BJP Continue

The latest exchange adds another chapter to the ongoing political confrontation between Gaurav Gogoi and Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Both leaders have frequently criticised each other’s political positions and governance records. The Congress has repeatedly raised allegations of corruption and financial irregularities against the Assam government. Meanwhile, the BJP has defended its administration and challenged the opposition’s claims.

Gogoi’s latest remarks combine two major issues: alleged corruption at the highest level of the state government and the increasing financial burden on electricity consumers.

The controversy over power purchase costs could also become an important political issue. Electricity expenses directly affect households and businesses, making tariff-related decisions a matter of public concern.

What Lies Ahead for Assam Politics?

Gogoi’s latest attack has intensified the debate over accountability, electricity pricing and public expenditure in Assam. His allegations have placed the Chief Minister under renewed political scrutiny, although the claims remain unproven.

The controversy also raises questions about the financial implications of the state’s power agreements and the government’s responsibility towards consumers.

As the political exchange continues, the Congress is likely to use these issues to challenge the BJP’s development claims. Meanwhile, the state government may face growing pressure to explain its electricity recovery decisions and long-term financial commitments.

For ordinary residents, the immediate concern remains the rising cost of electricity and its impact on household budgets. The wider political battle may continue, but transparency, financial accountability and affordable power will remain central issues in Assam’s public debate.
