A2Z International Heavy Equipment Institute, Kerala’s only JCB-authorised training centre and running since 1978, trains students from age 18 on backhoe loaders and excavators it owns.

Backhoe loader and excavator operators are among the most commonly recruited machine operators in GCC construction. Employers hiring for those roles first want to know where a candidate’s credential comes from, and an operator card issued after manufacturer-authorised JCB operator training in Kerala gives them a clear answer.
Firsts since 1978
A2Z has trained operators in Kerala for 47 years. Besides its JCB authorisation, it is the state’s only fixed tower crane training institute and was the first in Kerala to offer training on imported Zoomlion cranes. Its Heavy Equipment International Trade Test Centre at Willingdon Island, Kochi, is used by Gulf recruitment agencies and overseas contractors. The institute owns its whole training fleet and holds ISO 9001:2015 certification.
What the one-month course covers
Students train on backhoe loaders and excavators at the Kochi campus. They finish with a JCB-issued operator card, ISO certification, licensing support and placement assistance.
It is one of the shortest courses A2Z runs. High reach truck operation also takes one month, logistics equipment operation takes three, and the forklift and crane diplomas take six months each. The longest programme, the Advanced Diploma in Automobile Engineering, takes a year and covers thirteen machines.
Students need no degree and no previous machine experience. They must be at least 18, physically fit, and have government photo ID and proof of address. Students from other districts can stay in the hostel.
“It’s thirty days,” said Aravind, Executive Director of A2Z International Heavy Equipment Institute. “In thirty days a young man with no qualification can be holding a manufacturer’s operator card. I can’t think of another trade in Kerala where the gap is that short. Most people spend longer than that choosing a degree.”
Why owning the machines matters
The JCB backhoe loader and Hitachi excavator used in the course belong to the institute, as do its wheel loaders, telehandlers, forklifts, high reach trucks, mobile cranes, tower cranes, Bobcat skid-steer loaders and heavy trailers. Nothing is hired, so a student’s time on the machines doesn’t depend on a rental agreement.
“Hired machines are a problem this industry doesn’t talk about,” Aravind said. “A centre rents a machine for three days, puts thirty students around it, and each of them gets about twenty minutes in the seat. You won’t find that in a brochure. If you’re comparing JCB operator training in Kerala, ask whether the institute owns the machine and whether you can see it today.”
A credential that travels
Graduates can take the operator card from JCB operator training in Kerala abroad with them. In GCC recruitment, assessors often compare candidates from several countries against the same standard, and a card linked to the machine’s manufacturer makes verification quicker.
The final check is still a practical test. A2Z’s trade test centre is on the same campus, with its own test tracks and evaluation rooms. Candidates are assessed on pre-operation checks, controlled operation, safe working and completing the task, and they get a graded written report. The procedures follow the skill verification requirements used in GCC countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, and the assessors have worked as operators in the Gulf.
Moving on to more machines
Students who want more than one machine on their record can move on to A2Z’s multi-machine courses. The Basic Construction Course combines JCB, forklift and crane training. The Advanced Construction Equipment Course covers forklifts, JCB, Hitachi, hydra crane, mobile tower crane and heavy telescopic crane, with free motorcycle and LMV licences. The Diploma in Construction Equipments covers ten machines, and the Diploma in Hydraulic Equipments covers eleven and adds a fire and safety certificate.
A2Z works with more than 527 placement partner companies in construction and infrastructure, ports and logistics, industry and manufacturing, transport and haulage, mining and quarrying, and the GCC. It provides training, trade test assessment and placement assistance. It does not recruit for overseas jobs and refers candidates who want to work abroad to licensed recruiting agents.
