Left Parties Demand Election Assurance in Tripura Panchayat Polls

Left Parties

A six-member delegation of Left parties in Tripura met with the Tripura State Election Commissioner on Saturday, placing a set of four demands to ensure the upcoming panchayat elections are free, fair, and peaceful. The delegation emphasized the need for stringent measures to maintain the integrity of the electoral process in the state.

The representatives from the Left parties, including the CPI(M) and other allied groups, voiced concerns about potential irregularities and disruptions during the elections. They stressed the importance of a neutral and unbiased administration to oversee the panchayat elections, which are crucial for local governance and development.

One of the key demands was the deployment of central security forces to ensure a peaceful voting environment. The delegation argued that local law enforcement might not be sufficient to prevent electoral violence and intimidation. They cited past instances of unrest during elections and insisted that central forces would provide an added layer of security, reassuring voters and candidates alike.

Another demand focused on the accuracy and transparency of the electoral roll. The Left parties requested a thorough review and updating of the voter lists to eliminate discrepancies. They highlighted cases where eligible voters were omitted, and ineligible names were included, calling for a comprehensive verification process to rectify these issues.

The delegation also called for strict monitoring of the polling process, including the use of electronic surveillance and independent observers. They suggested that the presence of independent observers would deter malpractices and ensure that the elections are conducted in a transparent manner. Additionally, they urged the Election Commission to take immediate action against any violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

Lastly, the Left parties demanded a robust grievance redressal mechanism to address any complaints or disputes arising during the election period. They proposed setting up dedicated helplines and complaint cells to assist voters and candidates, ensuring that any issues are promptly and fairly resolved.

The Tripura State Election Commissioner assured the delegation that their concerns would be taken into consideration. The Commissioner emphasized the Commission’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections and promised to review the demands in detail. The meeting concluded with an understanding that the Election Commission would take necessary steps to address the issues raised by the Left parties, aiming to uphold the democratic process in the state.
