The Manipur Congress has raised concerns over continuing violence and insecurity in the state during a high-level meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on November 2. The discussions focused on restoring lasting peace and preparing the party for the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections.
The meeting brought together senior Congress leaders from Manipur to review the prevailing law and order situation and assess the party’s political and organisational readiness. Leaders stressed that peace, security and accountable governance must remain central to the state’s future.
Manipur Congress discusses continuing violence with central leadership
The meeting was attended by Manipur Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Keisham Meghachandra, state Congress president O Ibobi Singh, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Manipur Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka and other senior party functionaries.
According to Meghachandra, the discussions focused on the continuing violence, insecurity and prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. He also expressed concern over what the party described as the failure to restore lasting peace and normalcy in the state.
Sharing details on social media, Meghachandra said the meeting examined the challenges facing Manipur and the need to address the continuing uncertainty.
He emphasised that people across the state deserve peace, security and stability. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of accountable governance in rebuilding public confidence.
The Manipur Congress leadership also discussed the political situation and the need for sustained efforts to address the state’s ongoing challenges.
2027 Assembly elections feature prominently in discussions
Alongside the security situation, preparations for the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections formed an important part of the meeting.
The leaders reviewed the party’s organisational preparedness and discussed strategies for the forthcoming electoral contest. However, the immediate focus remained on strengthening the organisation while responding to the concerns of people affected by the prolonged crisis.
Meghachandra confirmed that the discussions included detailed deliberations on the upcoming elections and the Congress organisation’s readiness.
The meeting signals the party’s intention to strengthen its presence in Manipur ahead of the next Assembly polls. Additionally, consultations with national leaders could help the state unit coordinate its political priorities and campaign preparations.
For the Manipur Congress, the challenge will involve connecting its electoral strategy with the urgent concerns surrounding security, rehabilitation and normalcy.
Ethnic violence continues to shape Manipur’s political situation
Manipur has experienced prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes erupted between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki community.
The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and displaced thousands of people. It has also disrupted livelihoods, education, businesses and everyday activities across several districts.
Despite various efforts to improve the situation, concerns over civilian security and tensions between communities continue to affect the state.
More recently, fresh tensions involving Kuki and Naga groups have added to the security challenges. These developments have further complicated efforts to rebuild trust and restore normal relations between communities.
Consequently, the demand for lasting peace remains a central issue in Manipur’s political discussions.
The state’s continuing challenges also highlight the importance of dialogue, rehabilitation and sustained engagement with affected communities. Political parties face growing expectations to present practical approaches that address these concerns.
Congress leaders stress peace, security and accountable governance
Following the meeting, Meghachandra reiterated that restoring lasting peace remains one of the party’s foremost priorities.
He said people in Manipur deserve security, stability and responsible governance. Furthermore, he stressed that the state’s future depends on addressing the continuing crisis and creating conditions for normal life.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also discussed the situation with senior Manipur leaders. In a separate statement, he criticised the BJP’s handling of the crisis and accused the ruling leadership of failing to prevent the deterioration of law and order.
Kharge maintained that the Congress would seek to end what he described as BJP misrule through the forthcoming Assembly elections. He also emphasised peace, reconciliation and progress as essential priorities.
These remarks reflect the Congress leadership’s broader political position on the Manipur crisis. However, the restoration of normalcy will require sustained action beyond political statements.
Manipur Congress faces a critical road ahead
The November 2 meeting comes a day after Manipur Congress leaders participated in an INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. During the protest, party representatives raised slogans demanding action to save Manipur.
The rally also saw opposition leaders criticise the BJP over alleged electoral irregularities and voter roll revisions.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the Manipur Congress faces the task of strengthening its organisation while keeping the state’s security and humanitarian concerns at the centre of its political agenda.
Ultimately, the party’s approach will be shaped by its ability to address public concerns and present a credible vision for Manipur’s future. For people affected by years of unrest, restoring peace, rebuilding trust and ensuring security remain far more urgent than electoral competition.
