In a significant development in the case concerning the killing of the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Moreh in Manipur, two accused individuals have reportedly confessed to their involvement in the crime.
Arrest and Confession
The accused, identified as Philip Khaikholal Khongsai and Hemkholal Mate, were apprehended on charges related to the possession of arms and ammunition. During interrogation, they purportedly confessed to their participation in the assassination of Manipur Police Service (MPS) officer Chingtham Anand Kumar, who served as the SDPO of Moreh.
Circumstances of the Killing
Chingtham Anand Kumar was fatally shot on October 31, 2023, by armed militants while performing his duties overseeing the cleaning of the ground at Eastern Shine School for the construction of a helipad in Moreh, Manipur.
While in police custody, the accused individuals disclosed their involvement in the SDPO’s killing, providing crucial information to the investigating authorities. Subsequently, the investigating officer (IO) formally arrested them in connection with the case.
The court of special judge NIA, Imphal West, granted permission for the formal arrest of the duo. Following this decision, they were remanded into judicial custody until February 12.
Further Violence
In a concerning development, heavily armed militants launched additional attacks on state police forces on January 17. Utilizing sophisticated weapons, they targeted security personnel, resulting in the death of two Manipur police personnel and injuries to seven others in Moreh.
