Manipur Violence: Mobile Internet Services Suspended in Churachandpur

In response to escalating violence in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, the state government has taken decisive action, suspending mobile internet services for five days as a precautionary measure.

Suspension Implemented After Unrest

The decision to suspend mobile internet services in Churachandpur follows outbreaks of violence sparked by the suspension of a police head constable in the district.

The suspension of mobile internet services in Churachandpur district took effect from 1:40 am on Friday, February 16. This move aims to ensure the smooth functioning of administrative processes and maintain public order.

Dr. Mayengbam Veto Singh, joint secretary to the Manipur home department, issued an order outlining the temporary suspension or restriction of internet services. The order covers mobile data services and VPN-based internet/data services across the entire revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur District.

The decision to suspend mobile internet services is driven by concerns regarding the potential misuse of social media platforms. Authorities fear that certain anti-social elements may exploit these platforms to disseminate images, posts, and video messages that could incite further public unrest.
