Manish Thakor: Globalizing Gujarati Music via Bapji Studio

In an era dominated by modern pop and electronic beats, preserving regional folk culture requires a modern approach. Enter Manish Thakor, a digital pioneer who has taken on the mantle of safeguarding and promoting Gujarati folk music to a global audience. Through his immensely popular platform, Bapji Studio, Thakor has seamlessly bridged the gap between age-old cultural traditions and the fast-paced world of digital entertainment.

Hailing from a financially disadvantaged background in the Shiholi Moti village of Gandhinagar, Thakor’s ascent to digital stardom was anything but easy. His early educational journey in a government school was cut short when he failed his 10th-standard exams due to overwhelming familial hardships. Undeterred by this academic setback, he chose to focus on building a sustainable livelihood, finding work at the local Zebrata Tiles Studio.

It was during his decade-long tenure at this tile company that the seeds of his future empire were planted. Recognizing his unwavering work ethic, the company’s owner facilitated his training in computer systems. For Thakor, this was a golden ticket. He quickly absorbed everything he could about the digital landscape, transforming himself from a daily wage worker into a tech-savvy visionary with a profound love for his native culture.

Leveraging these technical skills, he founded Bapji Studio on YouTube in 2018. His primary mission was clear: to create a digital archive of Gujarati culture. He began by recording and uploading live Garba events and regional folk songs. The internet quickly took notice of his authentic representation of Gujarati heritage, and his subscriber base began to grow rapidly, fueled by the sheer love of the regional audience.

The studio’s watershed moment occurred in 2021 with the release of its first major production, “Mari Seenu Fashion Wali.” Sung by the talented Suresh Jhala, the track exploded across the internet, cementing Bapji Studio as a premier destination for regional music. This triumph paved the way for subsequent blockbuster releases. Collaborations with various artists yielded massive hits, such as “Parni Ne Tame Bija Ghar Re Jawana” by Rajni Dabhi, “Tame Bhulij Gaya To Hu Shu Karu” by Rahul Thakor, and “Hachavje Fota Mara Kom Lagshe” by Dilip Thakor.

Through sheer determination, Manish Thakor has transformed Bapji Studio into a cultural powerhouse. He has successfully utilized modern technology to ensure that the soulful melodies of Gujarati folk music are not only preserved but celebrated worldwide, providing an invaluable launching pad for the next generation of musical talent.
