Mary Kom Denies Retirement Rumors: Clarifies Statement at School Event

Indian women’s boxing icon and six-time World Champion, MC Mary Kom, dismissed reports of her retirement on Wednesday. Mary Kom, the first Indian boxer to clinch an Olympic medal, stated that she has not officially announced her retirement and has been misquoted in the media.

Misinterpretation of Statement

The clarification comes after Mary Kom’s statement made at a school event in Dibrugarh on January 24 sparked retirement speculations. She mentioned at the event, “I still have a hunger for achieving (laurels) in sports, but the age limit in the Olympics doesn’t allow me to participate, though I can carry on with my sport.”

Mary emphasized that her focus is currently on maintaining her fitness, and she will make a formal announcement about retirement when the time comes. She expressed her commitment to keeping the public informed whenever she decides to retire from professional boxing.

Mary Kom’s remarkable career includes six World Championships and an Olympic bronze medal in the flyweight category at the 2012 London Olympics. Her achievements have contributed significantly to the growth and recognition of women’s boxing in India.
