Medical Services Disrupted in JNIMS as Doctors Stage Protest

Patients in Manipur faced disruptions in medical services as doctors and medical students from the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) initiated a two-day strike to protest against harassment faced by the medical fraternity.

Protest Against Harassment

The strike, taking place at the JNIMS Superintendent’s office gate in Imphal East district, aims to bring attention to the challenges and harassment experienced by healthcare professionals. Banners at the protest site boldly declare, “Sit-in protest against the harassment of the medical fraternity.”

On the second day of the strike, disruptions are anticipated in crucial areas such as the Outpatient Department (OPD), Gynecologist sections, and Operation theatres, impacting patient services.

Placards at the protest site carry messages such as “Stop false allegations,” “Stop harassment, save the workplace environment,” “Stop extortion,” and “Stop violence against the medical fraternity.” These convey the gravity of the issues faced by medical professionals.

Speaking during the demonstration, senior doctor Matouleibi clarified that the protest is not targeted at any particular community or individual. Instead, it seeks to address a broader issue where healthcare professionals face unwarranted accountability in cases of mishaps or patient deaths.

Dr. Matouleibi urged the public in Manipur to stand in solidarity with the medical professionals. This support is crucial for healthcare professionals to carry out their duties effectively and fearlessly in the future.
