Meghalaya BJP Delegation Meets Rajnath Singh Over Shillong Cantonment Issues

Demand for Early Resolution on Relocation Matter

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation from Meghalaya met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to seek an early resolution on the proposed relocation of the Dalit Sikh community from Them lew Mawlong to the Shillong Cantonment area. Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai led the delegation, along with BJP Meghalaya State President Rikman G Momin.

The leaders raised the issue as a sensitive matter with long-standing implications. They urged the Ministry of Defence to find an amicable solution that safeguards social harmony and serves the broader interest of Meghalaya.

Sanbor Shullai Flags Local Concerns

Sanbor Shullai, who represents the Shillong Cantonment (Shillong West) constituency, explained the ground realities to the Defence Minister. He stressed the need for dialogue and timely action to prevent further delays.

Shullai also requested the Defence Ministry to ensure swift implementation of the Cantonment Board’s newly framed building bye-laws. He said updated regulations are essential for orderly development in the cantonment area.

Flyover Project and Defence Land Request

During the meeting, the delegation also sought approval for defence land acquisition needed to complete the Shillong flyover project. Shullai pointed out that delays in land clearance have slowed progress on the infrastructure project, which is crucial for easing traffic congestion in the city.

In addition, the leaders asked for the renewal of existing policies related to the cantonment area to bring clarity and continuity to administrative processes.

Rajnath Singh Assures Review

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured the Meghalaya BJP leaders that the Ministry would examine their concerns carefully. He said the issues raised would be forwarded to the concerned authorities for necessary action.

Following the meeting, Shullai said the delegation would continue to follow up with the Centre to ensure progress on the matters discussed.

Prime Minister Greets Meghalaya on Statehood Day

In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Meghalaya’s Statehood Day by sending a letter to the people of the state. In his message, he acknowledged the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia communities for preserving their rich cultural heritage.

Modi also praised the people of Meghalaya for promoting environmental conservation, maintaining social harmony, and advancing women’s empowerment. He reiterated the Union government’s commitment to the “Act East” policy and its relevance to Meghalaya’s growth.

Chief Minister Welcomes Centre’s Support

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s wishes. He also thanked the Centre for its continued support toward the state’s development initiatives.

Sangma said Meghalaya values its partnership with the Union government and looks forward to further collaboration on infrastructure, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.
