The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a major Bill to upgrade the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPH) into a full-fledged state university. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired the meeting where ministers cleared the proposal.
The Cabinet passed the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026. As a result, the institute can now independently award academic degrees to students and researchers. This step will strengthen academic autonomy and improve institutional governance.
Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPH)
The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong plays a key role in public health education in the Northeast. With university status, it can expand courses, strengthen research programmes, and build national and global partnerships. Moreover, the upgrade will attract scholars and health professionals to Meghalaya.
The government aims to develop IIPH Shillong into a premier centre for public health research and training. Consequently, the institute can address regional health challenges more effectively. It will also help produce skilled professionals for the healthcare sector.
In addition, the decision will boost higher education infrastructure in the state. Officials believe this move will enhance Meghalaya’s academic profile in the Northeast.
Eco Resort Expansion in Nongkhlaw
The Cabinet also granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) for infrastructure expansion at an eco resort in Nongkhlaw. The approval covers furnishing, operational arrangements, and maintenance work.
This decision will strengthen eco-tourism in the region. Furthermore, it will generate local employment and improve hospitality services. At the same time, the government plans to maintain environmental safeguards.
By supporting sustainable tourism, the state aims to balance economic growth with ecological protection. Therefore, the project will contribute to rural development without harming natural resources.
Promotion Policy for Anganwadi Workers
The Cabinet also approved a state policy that creates promotion pathways for anganwadi workers. Under the new policy, eligible workers can move into supervisory roles. This step will improve career growth and boost morale.
The policy will strengthen the implementation of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in Meghalaya. In addition, it will improve monitoring and service delivery across the state.
Anganwadi workers play a crucial role in providing nutrition, early childhood education, and maternal care services. Therefore, the new policy will enhance accountability and efficiency at the grassroots level.
Overall, the Cabinet’s decisions focus on education reform, tourism development, and social welfare improvement. Together, these measures will support inclusive growth and stronger public institutions in Meghalaya.
