In a vibrant kickstart to the upcoming Meghalaya Games 2024, the official anthem, “Here We Play,” resonated through an event in Tura. A collaborative masterpiece between Shillong’s folk fusion group ‘Summersalt’ and Tura’s ‘NOKPANTE,’ the anthem embodies unity through sportsmanship, embracing cultural diversity with lyrics in English, Khasi, Garo, and Pnar languages.

Cultural Fusion Creates Unifying Anthem

Crafted under the initiative of West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner for the Meghalaya Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, the anthem stands as a cultural blend, weaving together the rich tapestry of Meghalaya’s heritage. Scheduled from January 15 to January 20, 2024, the Meghalaya Games anticipates an electric start with the launch of this resonant anthem.

Chief Minister and Minister Laud Anthem’s Values

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praised the anthem for embodying the values of unity, perseverance, and the indomitable Meghalayan spirit. Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the anthem’s role in fostering pride in cultural heritage and inspiring the youth towards excellence.

Inspirational Narrative in Lyrics and Music

Lyrically composed by Kit Shangpliang of Summersalt and Mikhael Marak from NOKPANTE, the anthem weaves a motivational narrative, emphasizing the values of hard work, discipline, and resilience. Led by Augustine Kurbah, the orchestration incorporates indigenous musical elements, mirroring the heartbeat of Meghalaya.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Summersalt’s Kit Shangpliang lauded the seamless partnership with NOKPANTE. Mikhail Marak from NOKPANTE emphasized the intentional incorporation of Garo and Khasi chants, injecting a sense of identity into the anthem.

The anthem, ‘Here We Play,’ will serve as the auditory backdrop for the Meghalaya Games 2024, symbolizing victory chants with the convergence of ‘Hoikiw’ and ‘Ahowee.’ The anthem’s presence will extend to medal ceremonies, becoming an enduring symbol of the event’s spirit.
