Meghalaya Panel Inspects Progress of Shillong Smart City Projects to Ensure Transparency and Sustainability

The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, headed by Chairman Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh constituency, recently undertook an inspection of key projects under the Shillong Smart City Project. This initiative aims to transform Shillong into a modern, efficient, and sustainable city by implementing various urban development programs, enhancing infrastructure, and improving the quality of life for its residents.

The committee’s visit was a significant step in assessing the progress of the ambitious Smart City project. The members toured various areas where development work is taking place, including infrastructural projects designed to upgrade the city’s roads, drainage systems, and public spaces. They also reviewed efforts to improve the city’s digital infrastructure, such as the establishment of Wi-Fi hotspots and the installation of smart traffic management systems.

As part of their inspection, the committee examined ongoing works that are designed to address the growing needs of the city’s urban population. One of the key highlights of the visit was the progress of the Integrated Command and Control Centre, which is expected to play a pivotal role in managing the city’s infrastructure and resources. The Centre is part of the broader vision of using technology to monitor and optimize urban services in real-time, ensuring greater efficiency and improved service delivery for Shillong’s residents.

Syiem, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the implementation of the Smart City projects. He noted that while the vision behind the Smart City initiative is promising, it is crucial that the projects are completed within the allocated timeframes and budgets. He further highlighted the need for regular oversight to ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of these projects.

The committee also focused on the environmental aspects of the Shillong Smart City project. With Shillong being known for its scenic beauty and natural resources, the members expressed the importance of ensuring that the urbanization efforts do not compromise the city’s unique environmental heritage. The committee reviewed proposals to integrate green spaces, promote eco-friendly construction practices, and implement sustainable water and waste management systems.

Among the key projects under the Smart City initiative is the redevelopment of the iconic Police Bazar area, which is expected to undergo significant transformation. The project aims to improve pedestrian walkways, enhance public safety measures, and provide better amenities to both locals and tourists. Additionally, the committee inspected the ongoing work to build modern housing units for Shillong’s growing population, ensuring that affordable housing is a key focus of the development plans.

Another major project that caught the attention of the committee members was the development of smart transportation systems. This includes the introduction of electric buses and the optimization of traffic flow through the use of smart traffic signals and monitoring systems. The goal is to reduce congestion, enhance mobility, and make public transportation more accessible and efficient for the people of Shillong.

Despite the promising developments, the committee also expressed concerns regarding delays in some of the ongoing projects. Members stressed the need for more effective coordination between various government agencies and contractors to ensure timely completion. They also underscored the necessity of community engagement in the planning and execution of these projects, ensuring that the views and needs of local residents are taken into account.
