Meghalaya’s Lakadong Turmeric Secures Coveted GI Tag

In a groundbreaking achievement, Meghalaya’s Lakadong turmeric, revered for its exceptional health benefits, has clinched the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Registrar of Geographical Indications in Chennai.

Exceptional Recognition for Lakadong Turmeric

Originating from a serene village nestled in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills, Lakadong Turmeric has carved its place as one of the world’s finest turmeric varieties. Its global reach extends to destinations such as the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The highly anticipated revelation of the GI tag was made by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during the inaugural session of the third edition of the Farmers’ Parliament at the State Convention Centre.

A Journey of Persistence and Learning

Expressing his elation, CM Sangma shared, “Today, I’m very happy to inform you that on the 29th of November, which was just last week, The Registrar of Geographical Indications in Chennai has finally given the GI tag to Lakadong turmeric. We started this process four years ago. It did not happen in one go. So what I am trying to tell you is that as we went along, we learned, we improved, and we did small things that would make a big difference in the lives of the farmers.”

The Unique Curcumin Power of Lakadong

What sets the Meghalaya-grown Lakadong turmeric apart is its extraordinary curcumin content, renowned for its immune-boosting properties. Lakadong stands out with curcumin levels ranging from seven to eight percent, a significant contrast to the typical varieties containing only two to three percent curcumin.
