Mizoram 2028 polls are being treated as a serious political priority by the BJP central leadership, newly appointed state in-charge Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad said on October 5.
Speaking to reporters in Aizawl, Karad said his appointment showed the party’s focus on the next Assembly election. He also said he would visit Mizoram regularly to help strengthen the BJP organisation at the grassroots level.
Mizoram 2028 polls become a central BJP focus
Karad, a former Union Minister of State for Finance, has been given charge of Mizoram as the party prepares for the 2028 Assembly election. He has also been assigned the role of BJP Northeast Co-Coordinator for the wider region.
“The central BJP leadership is taking the upcoming General Elections in Mizoram very seriously,” Karad said, according to PTI. He said the party would work to build its organisation and maintain a stronger presence across the state.
The BJP’s renewed focus comes well before the next election. Karad’s appointment gives him a direct organisational role in preparing the state unit. Therefore, his regular visits are expected to focus on coordination, worker support and strengthening the party network.
Karad sets a goal for Mizoram 2028 polls
Mizoram 2028 polls have also featured prominently in Karad’s first public engagements after taking charge. At a BJP programme in Aizawl on October 3, he said the party had set its sights on forming the government after the 2028 Assembly election.
Karad said his immediate task was to strengthen the organisation and address difficulties faced by BJP members at different levels. He also urged workers to work together towards the election.
The BJP currently has two MLAs in Mizoram’s 40-member Assembly. Both represent constituencies in Siaha district in the southern part of the state. The party has not previously formed the state government.
Grassroots work shapes Mizoram 2028 polls strategy
For the BJP, the next phase will involve building its organisation beyond its existing pockets of support. Karad said the state and central organisations were connected, and that problems raised at the grassroots level were also a concern for the party’s central leadership.
That emphasis places party workers and local organisation at the centre of the preparations. Moreover, Karad said he would work to strengthen the BJP in Mizoram while contributing to development in the state.
He also referred to his earlier visits to Mizoram as Union Minister of State for Finance. During that period, he had visited Mamit district in connection with the Centre’s focus on Aspirational Districts in the Northeast.
BJP had signalled its 2028 target earlier
Mizoram 2028 polls were already a stated target for the state BJP before Karad’s appointment. On August 28, state BJP president K Beichhua said the party aimed to form its first government in Mizoram in the next Assembly election.
Beichhua said the central leadership was helping the state unit expand its organisational base. He also said Mizoram-related issues had been discussed at a national-level meeting in New Delhi chaired by BJP president Nitin Nabin.
The BJP’s position contrasts with the current political setting in Mizoram. The Zoram People’s Movement, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, came to power in the 2023 Assembly election. Meanwhile, the Mizo National Front has also said it is preparing for the next electoral contest.
Karad’s role takes shape before Mizoram 2028 polls
With the 2028 contest still ahead, Karad’s immediate focus remains organisational rather than on a formal campaign. His remarks indicate that the BJP central leadership wants sustained attention on Mizoram before the election period begins.
Mizoram 2028 polls will therefore be a key test of the BJP’s organisational expansion in the state. For now, Karad is calling for greater coordination among party workers and a stronger grassroots structure. The party’s stated objective is to turn that organisational effort into a bid for government in 2028.
The coming months will show how the new state in-charge translates that stated priority into organisational activity across Mizoram. For the BJP, the emphasis is now on preparation, coordination and building a wider state-level network ahead of the election.
