Mizoram Seizes Rs 1,047 Crore Worth of Narcotics in 2025-26, Governor Tells Assembly

Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Tuesday announced that law enforcement agencies seized narcotics worth Rs 1,047 crore during the 2025-26 fiscal year. He said the figures reflect intensified efforts to curb cross-border smuggling and drug trafficking.

Addressing members at the start of the budget session in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, the Governor highlighted coordinated policing and stronger border surveillance. He credited joint operations involving the state police, the Assam Rifles, and the Border Security Force (BSF) for maintaining law and order.

Stronger Border Vigil Along International Frontiers

Mizoram shares 325 km of inter-state borders with Assam, Manipur, and Tripura. It also has an 828-km international boundary with Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Governor said security forces have increased vigilance along these sensitive stretches to block smuggling routes.

Apart from narcotics, authorities seized large consignments of areca nuts, liquor, arms, explosives, and counterfeit currency. Multiple arrests followed these operations.

The state excise and narcotics department alone arrested 652 drug traffickers during the fiscal year. Officials confiscated 487 kilograms of narcotic substances in separate operations.

Drug Abuse Remains a Major Concern

Governor Singh described drug trafficking and substance abuse as serious and persistent threats. He said the government continues to adopt strict measures under the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act, 2019.

Between October and December, authorities registered 4,915 cases under the Act and made 4,532 arrests. The law, recently amended, allows limited liquor sales for dignitaries and local wine production. However, enforcement agencies continue to crack down on illegal trade.

Institutional Measures to Boost Enforcement

To strengthen the justice system, the state government has established a dedicated prosecution directorate. Authorities have also introduced biometric checks for foreign nationals entering the state. Officials believe these measures will help monitor movement and prevent illegal activities.

The government has partnered with the National Forensic Sciences University to improve investigation standards. It has also deployed mobile forensic units to assist in field-level evidence collection. These steps aim to ensure faster and more accurate case disposal.

Budget Session Underway

The four-week Assembly session began this week and will conclude on March 16. Chief Minister Lalduhoma is scheduled to present the 2026-27 state budget and the supplementary budget for 2025-26 on February 26.

The Governor expressed confidence that continued coordination between enforcement agencies and the government would further reduce smuggling activities. He urged lawmakers to support policies that strengthen border security and combat drug abuse.

With large-scale seizures and enhanced surveillance measures, Mizoram has intensified its fight against cross-border crime. The government aims to protect public safety while reinforcing the state’s strategic border management efforts.
