Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland have emerged as star performers in the NITI Aayog NE SDG Index 2023-24, underlining strong strides in sustainable development in India’s Northeast. However, intra-state gaps and lingering challenges continue to hinder uniform progress.
The NITI Aayog NE SDG Index 2023-24 evaluates progress across 103 districts in the eight northeastern states, assessing their performance on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like health, education, gender equality, and climate action.
Mizoram Steals the Spotlight
Among all northeastern states, Mizoram districts have claimed top spots, showcasing remarkable performance in health services, education levels, and gender parity.
Officials said districts like Aizawl have excelled in reducing maternal mortality rates and improving literacy, contributing to Mizoram’s overall high score.
A senior NITI Aayog official stated:
“Mizoram’s consistent performance stems from robust health infrastructure, effective community programs, and active participation from local bodies.”
Tripura Makes Steady Gains
Tripura has also shown solid progress, particularly in sectors like clean water access, sanitation, and digital literacy. Districts such as West Tripura are performing better than many urban districts nationwide.
However, disparities between urban and rural regions persist, reflecting a need for targeted interventions in remote areas.
Tripura’s Planning Department welcomed the report, saying:
“We are encouraged by the progress. Yet, we know gaps remain, especially in reducing rural poverty and improving women’s economic participation.”
Nagaland Shows Impressive Strides
Nagaland’s performance is another highlight in the NE SDG Index. Districts like Kohima and Dimapur have advanced in areas of sustainable urban development and skill-building initiatives for youth.
Nagaland’s progress reflects effective collaborations between government agencies and civil society groups working on climate resilience and livelihood generation.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio recently noted:
“Our people are our strength. We will continue our journey toward achieving the SDGs, leaving no one behind.”
Challenges Remain Despite Success
Despite the celebrations, significant gaps remain in several SDGs across the region. Challenges include data quality, limited resources, and infrastructure constraints in remote districts.
NITI Aayog officials flagged discrepancies in data collection, which impacts accurate assessments and policy planning. Several districts continue to struggle with malnutrition, unemployment, and poor internet connectivity.
A policy analyst commented:
“Progress is real, but uneven. Focus must shift to bridging gaps between top-performing districts and those lagging behind.”
Government and NITI Aayog Commit to Future Action
NITI Aayog has pledged further collaboration with northeastern states to improve data monitoring and drive targeted development programs. A roadmap is under discussion to address persistent gaps, especially in healthcare, women’s empowerment, and climate adaptation.
Experts urge state governments to adopt data-driven approaches and ensure equitable resource distribution.
A Call for Sustained Efforts
While Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland deserve praise, the road ahead demands unwavering commitment. Policymakers, civil society, and communities must work in unison to ensure that development reaches every corner of the Northeast.
Progress on sustainable development will determine not only the region’s prosperity but also India’s ability to achieve the 2030 SDG targets.
