The Nagaon bypoll campaign entered its final phase on October 4, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) turning to a large booth-level mobilisation exercise across the constituency. The campaign for the October 6 Lok Sabha election is set to close after the final round of outreach.
The BJP said booth committees across all 2,309 polling booths will organise simultaneous padyatras from 11 am as part of the final campaign push.
The exercise comes after an intensive campaign led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The BJP-led alliance has focused on direct voter contact across all eight Assembly segments of the parliamentary constituency.
BJP expands grassroots outreach
The Nagaon bypoll campaign has featured a multi-level organisational effort by the NDA. According to BJP election media in-charge Dilip Kumar Sarma, senior leaders and party workers held more than 1,100 meetings across the constituency.
The party also said its 25 Mandal Committees in Nagaon and Morigaon districts carried out door-to-door outreach and organised more than 5,000 courtyard meetings. In addition, BJP frontal organisations conducted over 9,500 courtyard meetings as part of their voter mobilisation efforts.
These activities included outreach by the BJP Mahila Morcha, Yuva Morcha and Minority Morcha, along with Kisan, OBC, SC and ST wings.
Himanta Biswa Sarma leads campaign
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been a central figure in the NDA campaign for BJP candidate Debasish Sharma. He addressed 15 public meetings covering all eight Assembly segments, according to the party.
The Chief Minister began his campaign in Nagaon on September 28 and later addressed meetings in different parts of the constituency. His campaign focused on supporting the NDA candidate and highlighting the ruling alliance’s development agenda.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other senior BJP and alliance leaders also campaigned for Sharma. The BJP has used the final days to strengthen its organisational presence and reach voters directly.
Nagaon bypoll draws three-way contest
The Nagaon bypoll was necessitated after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha and later joined the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 6, while counting will take place on October 9.
The contest includes BJP-led NDA candidate Debasish Sharma, Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Sharma, a former Nagaon deputy commissioner who recently resigned from the civil services, was selected by the BJP as its candidate in September.
Meanwhile, the opposition campaign has also remained active.
Final booth push before voting
With campaigning nearing its deadline, the BJP-led NDA is now relying heavily on its booth network, before the campaign period closes.
The final mobilisation also follows several weeks of rallies, public meetings, door-to-door visits and courtyard interactions. Moreover, the scale of the booth exercise underlines the importance the ruling alliance has attached to the Nagaon contest.
Polling will take place on October 6, giving candidates and parties little time after the campaign ends to reach voters. The result on October 9 will determine whether the BJP-led alliance can secure the seat after the political shift that created the vacancy.
For now, the Nagaon bypoll has moved into its final stage, with the BJP and its allies seeking to convert their extensive campaign and booth-level organisation into voter support on polling day.
