About Nandini Kashyap hit-and-run case, the Kamrup (Metro) CJM Court on Wednesday rejected the actress’s bail plea. She has been sent to two-day police custody in connection with the tragic accident that occurred on July 25 in Guwahati.
The hit-and-run incident claimed the life of 21-year-old Samiul Haque, a resident of the Dakhingaon locality. His untimely death has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
Fatal Accident in Dakhingaon
According to Guwahati Police, the incident took place late at night when Kashyap’s car allegedly struck Samiul, who was returning home on foot. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was speeding and did not stop after the collision.
Locals rushed Samiul to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). However, he succumbed to his injuries on arrival.
Following the accident, Kashyap allegedly fled the scene. Her car was traced and seized the next morning near her residence.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The police registered a case under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) at Hatigaon Police Station. After collecting CCTV footage and witness statements, authorities arrested Nandini Kashyap on July 28.
During preliminary questioning, the actress reportedly claimed she was unaware she had hit anyone. However, the police have called this claim “inconsistent” with the available evidence.
Bail Plea Rejected
At her court appearance on July 30, Kashyap’s legal team requested bail on health and cooperation grounds. They argued that she had no criminal record and was not a flight risk.
However, the prosecution stressed the gravity of the charges. The court was told that her conduct after the accident, including fleeing the scene and not informing the police, pointed to an attempt to suppress evidence.
Taking these factors into account, the Kamrup (Metro) CJM Court rejected the bail application and granted two-day police custody for further interrogation.
Public Reaction and Protests
The incident has led to strong public reactions across Assam, especially on social media. Many have criticized what they see as lenient treatment of public figures in legal matters.
Students and local organizations staged a protest outside Hatigaon Police Station on Tuesday, demanding a fair trial and maximum punishment if Kashyap is found guilty.
The victim’s family has also spoken to the media, urging the government to take strict legal action and ensure that “justice is not derailed due to influence or status.”
Nandini Kashyap’s Statement
Kashyap, a popular figure in the Assamese film and television industry, has not released an official public statement. However, her lawyer stated outside the court that “the truth will come out soon”, and urged the media to respect her right to a fair trial.
Sources say that the police may now examine her phone records and conduct a forensic analysis of the car involved in the incident. Investigators are also looking into whether she was under the influence at the time of the accident.
What’s Next?
Police will continue questioning Kashyap over the next 48 hours to piece together the timeline of events. Investigators are also in the process of submitting the final forensic and postmortem reports.
The next court hearing is expected on August 1, when the police may seek an extension of custody or submit a remand report based on new findings.
The case continues to draw public attention as it raises broader questions around celebrity accountability and road safety in Assam.
